Players like vernon Maxwell and olujuwon made plays and Calvin Murphy argued with refs and ate oakmeal cookies.

Vernon was elated last week when his former coach Rudy Tomjanovich was named to the Hall of Fame.

“He should have been there long ago,” Vernon said. “But he’s there now and belongs there. I am thrilled. I really want to be there for the ceremony.

“He and my high school coach (Rick Swain from Buchholz High School in Florida) are the two coaches who made me the best player I could be. Rudy T let me be me. He saw what worked with me and let me go. I am so happy for him, I can’t even explain it.”

Vernon, like so many others, hopes he will be watching the Rockets again soon. He said he can’t see how the NBA is going to come back this year because of the coronavirus pandemic and just hopes that if it does, it will be safe for everyone involved.

“For now, though, we just all need to take this seriously and stay home and take care of each other. And we need to be good to each other – the first responders are so amazing. I hope everyone is out there thanking them and being respectful because they are doing a lot.”

When it does, he is anxious to see how the Rockets will fare.

“I would have never even imagined this world of small ball,” Vernon said. “I always played with big men on the court. I think they need one, but we’ll see. The game has changed so much. It’s always evolving. I sure will be cheering for my Rockets when they come back.
