The Texans have signed safety Bernard Pollard to replace Chester Pitts on the roster.

Pitts, who underwent major knee surgery on Wednesday, was placed on injured reserve, meaning he's out for the season.

Pollard, 24, was Kansas City's second-round pick in 2006. He started 16 games last season for David Gibbs, who is in his first season as the Texans' secondary coach. Last season, Pollard had 84 unassisted tackles, and he was a surprise cut by the Chiefs in the last roster reduction this season.

Pollard, who is an excellent special teams player, got a lot of attention last season when he hit Tom Brady in the first game of the season, causing the New England quarterback to be lost for the season with a knee injury.

Pollard gives the Texans five safeties, counting Eugene Wilson, John Busing, Dominique Barber and Nick Ferguson.

    at least he can dance?

Actually we could use a guy like this to clothesline the likes of Chris Johnson, next time he decides to run up the middle. Don't mind having a hard hitter on defense even with below average coverage skills.

Nice, dude is a HARD hitter.

Two thumbs up for the pickup, a former Gibbs guy to boot!

Should be a good body on the practice squad and help out if we suffer any injuries....or crappy safety play.

I love how they mention that he's the guy who bombed Brady's knee.

Like we're bringing him in with the hopes he can blast Peyton or something.

Not to joke about injury or anything, but that might finally get us in the playoffs.

If he's that good of a hitter and nobody wanted him after he was cut... its pretty safe to assume he's perhaps one notch above Matt Stevens when it comes to coverage.

He couldn't be any worse than Dominque Barber or Nick Ferguson. It's kind of risky that the Texans are only carrying 8 offensive lineman on the active roster.

If he has a PULSE, he's already one of the best safeties in the history of our franchise.

I was wondering if we were going to bring him in after I saw that KC cut him. He's been regarded as an above average safety, or at least he was a couple years back. But Eugene Wilson has looked terrible, and Barber is in the doghouse for blown assignments (in both games, I think), so I see why they did it.

8 o-lineman is scary, but I guess with Caldwell and Chris White being so versatile we'll be okay.

Very hopeful this leads (eventually) to Ferguson getting cut, Barber surrendering his position, and Wilson/Busing splitting duty opposite Pollard.

But Pollard does have to demonstrate he can take over - lucky the bar is awfully low.

That assumption is correct. He is also prone to whiffing on tackles.

Nobody wanted Will Demps and he was a pro-bowl alternate in his first season with the Texans.

I'm sure this guy can at least help on special teams.
