    Spot on.

There were only two ways to screw this up.

    #1 - hire a Rick Smith seatwarmer

    #2 - hire a BOB yes man

We somehow went with a mix of both.

    Disaster.

Yeah; but we have no idea how that manifested. For all we know, he hated Xavier Su'a-Filo and was overruled by Rick Smith.

It's seriously hard to imagine a worse scenario.

No one was fired AND they bring back a key architect of the massive fail of last year.

Maybe, but the way they've gotten rid of Kubiaks players and replaced them with Patriot guys or players for the OB and RAC systems makes me think otherwise.

I think Rick definitely pushed back on some moves, but my guess is OBrien just didn't like his scouting and cap management rather than getting overruled on anything by Rick.

I am absolutely intent on coming back. I will maintain at least that executive vice president title...

You mean, like former Kubiak QB Brock Osweiler?...

Again, I can't find enough 0s to indicate how much, %-wise, I agree with the reaction to the "search" and the meh-ness of the hire on the surface. But I'm willing to at least give it a chance.

He's not Rick Smith. So we got that going for us.

Fair enough to give them a chance, but I wonder if they are actually gonna try to do things differently or are gonna double down

They let go Brandon Brooks, Ben Jones and Bouye. And signing Wilfork, Hoyer and Mallet. Drafting big and slow at NT and TE. Letting Owen Daniels go. Getting little gadget players like Braxton Miller.

And Osweiler was familiar with OBriens system I believe

That's the hope; that he'll bring a different perspective.

This is fair. But EVERY team has a list of bad decisions like this - even the Patriots.

Eh.... where? He'd be with the Broncos his whole career.

At least we'll finally be able to blame BOB for his incompetence now that he controls everything. That's the sole silver lining to BOB becoming the de-facto GM.

The reason why this higher was important to rebuilding our current franchise is because of the relationship he has/had with O'Brien. I also believe this move will give Bill O'Brien more power in the player/personnel department. I'm very excited to see where this team will be in 2 to 3 years.

That's what I'll be hoping for too. Don't get it twisted, if BOB learns how to be a competent coach during the off-season and he operates as a competent GM then I'll be ecstatic....I just don't see any reason to expect that to happen.

That's right, every team makes bad decisions. The Texans seem to do a lot more as every position except QB and maybe WR or K got worse last year. That's quite a feat.

Mazzone offense at ASU when Brock was there was a spread offense with similarities to the spread ep system of the Patriots. https://www.saturdaydownsouth.com/tamu-football/in-depth-look-at-noel-mazzone-offense-texas-am/

I think if Vrabel does get a HC job that RAC would stay here, they probably wouldn't even get a new DC.

If there's a silver lining in all of this it's that O'Brien will have zero excuses now if the team doesn't perform (barring another Watson injury). He's got a franchise QB, he has his guy as GM and nobody will be able to say "What if this was Rick Smith's fault?" anymore. We're really about to see if he can build and coach an NFL team at a high level or if he's as mediocre as we all probably think he is.
