Stretch-4s: How Rudy Tomjanovich and Robert Horry radically changed NBA offenses

During the 1995 Western Conference semifinals, Houston Rockets Coach Rudy Tomjanovich had never heard the term “stretch-4,” because it had not entered the basketball vernacular. The phrase “pace and space” did not exist. Tomjanovich only sought a means to guard Phoenix Suns forward Charles Barkley without double-teaming him, to prevent passes to open three-point shooters. And so Tomjanovich tried something new. He played usual small forward Robert Horry at power forward.

Tomjanovich quickly realized the defensive strategy actually created a more significant shift in the Rockets’ offense. With Horry on the floor instead of a plodding power forward, four shooters surrounded center Hakeem Olajuwon, and every player on the court had more space to operate. It gave Tomjanovich a sudden, clear insight: This is how teams should play.

How long does the widespread adoption of useful innovation take? In sports, drenched in cautious convention and baked-in tradition, it usually takes longer than it should. Twenty years after Tomjanovich rode his small lineup to an unlikely championship, mismatch-creating, sharp-shooting power forwards – “stretch-4s” – have become a staple of NBA offenses, which are playing with more free-flowing, quickened pace than ever before.

Rudy said the stretch 4 wasn’t his initial thought. The initial reason was to defend a superstar better.

This is why I’ve always said the need to draft and play longer and better wing defenders (to stop superstars) is what caused the shift to offenses shooting more threes. It wasn’t offense changes first, followed by defense to stop it, it was defenses always needed to stop superstars, so we created more and more 3 and D players, via draft and development. Which had the 2nd benefit of Spacing

Many of these role playing good to great wing defenders couldn’t contribute much on offense, even in motion offenses, but they could learn to shoot corner threes...and then when you could also defend without a center, you forced mismatches...small ball.

Eradicating illegal defense rules also created more ways to use these wing defenders.

Defensive shifts to stop superstars, and the best offenses, created the paradigmatic shift. And Rudy/Horry were the Genesis.

Ownership has spent 110 million dollars each year on 4 guards - Harden, Paul, Gordon, Knight

No more money for Stretch 4 such as Kevin Love.

Gordon and Knight for Love would cost Tilman $188 million repeater tax.

In the context of this article, PJ Tucker is one of the premier examples of a Stretch 4 everyone wants ... he is the poster child for a multi-position defender who can drop the corner 3 at a very high clip.

What Op wants is a volume stretch 4 shooter not Carmelo Anthony or PJ.

Another thing that should be mentioned is how effective the stretch forward was in creating a more efficient offense and defense across the board.

AS we know a good stretch forward can cover, most wing and low post players, just as much as they can create matchup problems on the other side of the ball, especially if they can shoot 3s and play in the post.

It is a Crime that Rudy Tomjanovich is still not a Hall of Famer. Media just overlooks him every year.
Overrated Players like Tracy McGrady gets in with only a First Round Exit in the Playoffs but a 2 Time NBA Champion isn't in. Very Shameful Voters and Media

I tell my kid the story of Hakeem Olajuwon every night (no lie)

He will grow up to be great like his hero
