this isn't really basketball related, but why does is he always referred to with his middle initial? like, when skip bayless is addressing him, he says, "Stephen A....." he, or nobody else for that matter, call him just plain "Stephen" why?

no really, im sorry for making this thread, but i am really interested in this for some reason, i mean, why 'Stephen A' instead of plain ol Stephen. one explanation is all i need.
My guess is that "Stephen Smith" is a common name, and he wanted a way to distinguish himself from everyone else. When I hear the name "Stephen Smith", I think about the guy who used to play for the Hawks.
Years ago, on The Best Damn Sports Show Period, I think he said that it was some type of tribute to his mother.
