Yes, I guess in my definition it is, but there's really none of that in Houston... until the team was mentioned to have the name. When do you remember anyone mentioning any of that in this area? I don't think it was.
Why? There were native tribes in the area calling themselves this. The U.S.A.'s soccer league and its fans are always imitating other leagues and names. Like Oberman said, they're Soccer Jr. They cannot come up with something on their own: "D.C. United" (United? Like West Ham, Manchester, Newcastle, etc.)... "Sporting Kansas City" (like Sporting De Gijón from Spain, Sporting from Lisboa, etc.)... and they want scarfs, too, but most cities are hot (WTF?) :grin: LOL The SPORTING thing comes from other teams around the world. Not original at all.

Now explain to us what you mean by "they cannot come up with something on their own" when you also pointed out there are many "Uniteds" and "Sporting" and Reals and FC. So, it's original to call yourself United as long as you are not from the United States? you make no sense.
Team names that don't imitate other leagues' team names are original. Like, for example: "L.A. Galaxy", "Columbus Crew" or "Chicago Fire". Those are original because they're not imitating names across the pond. In regards to the "United" imitation, the England teams don't call themselves "United" because of the "United" States. Come on, now. Did you know that "Real" like "Real Madrid" and "Real Sociedad" are names of nicknames for "royalty"? The name "Real" in Spanish means "royalty", man. That's why the name "Real Salt Lake" makes no sense because people here in English still say "REY-all" instead of "REE-all"... but it's still a "Royal" meaning, not a "reality" REAL meaning. THAT makes no sense... and it's comical... in the imitation sense.
See at least that name has something to do with the city. Why haven't the Lakers or Jazz renamed their team? The Lakers, OK maybe for Nostalgia. But still the Jazz? I think Washington should go back to the Bullets.

moving from Bullets to Wizards has to be the dumbest move ever, as they literally switched up from the controversial drive by shooting to grand master of the KKK.
Washington Wizards is just nonsense, same with Sporting Kansas City, Anaheim Mighty Ducks, Montreal Impact, Toronto Raptors & Memphis Grizzlies. Team names (some leeway given for teams that moved ages ago and are now iconic like the Lakers & Dodgers) should reflect some sort of connection to the city. New Orleans Jazz would be, once again, one of the best team names in sports. Orlando Magic is pretty candyass, but it fits. I miss the Seattle Supersonics. Arlington Rangers is the worst, though.

Any team name with no originality or connection to the place they play is pretty lame to me. The NBA probably has the lamest set of names. Thunder sounded like such a generic name from the start. Bobcats was awful. Raptors is stupid (real Raptors weren't nearly as cool as movie Raptors, and WTF do raptors have to do with Toronto) Utah Jazz and Memphis Grizzlies are awful for their current locations The NFL has some generic names, but not many terrible ones. Baseball has such a long tradition it's hard to dislike any of the names. The newer teams have all picked names that fit pretty well and sound original.
