Does anyone know who are the special team backups for PK and K? I remember that back in the day of the Oilers, I saw Del Greco back up Montgomery before we picked up Reggie Roby and then Bruce Matthews would kick some sweet ass punts. I saw him do it at the practice facility once everyone was gone. The only P who is listed is Donnie Jones and the only K listed is Shayne Graham, with K Bullock in the IR list. Thanks.
There is no room for roster spots for backup kickers. If one is needed, they are readily available in the free arent pool.
No NFL team is going to carry 2 at each of those positions. It's likely that Graham can punt and Jones can kick in an emergency. They're both probably soccer players and likely handled both duties while in HS or college. Either that or they've already found someone on the roster who kicked while in school and they're the emergency replacement...much like Owen Daniels is the emergency QB.
i always wondered why there is not more kickers who can punt and punters who can kick. i would think they could get a nice contract.
^ because usually punters hold for field goals. I used to do this for high school. Our kicker had a great leg. When I graduated high school, the kid that came in after the kid that was kicker while I was there (he was a junior when I was a senior) would both punt and kick, and they almost NEVER had to kick a field goal. They went to the playoffs and were tops in the district in kickoffs (almost all were touchbacks because he had a strong leg). Usually, punters have more of a leg, while kickers have more of an accurate drive. Just wanted to know who as TEXANS current player can punt or kick in case the other cannot for any reason (I don't want to jinx anyone!!!)... apparently there isn't anyone right now in the depth chart. I should just call them directly. Can I do that? I am happy we are keeping Bullock on reserve and that we now have Donnie Jones off the Rams. Here is a great article on him: Spoiler http://blog.chron.com/ultimatetexans/2012/08/texans-may-have-found-a-gem-in-punter/
i must be having a nightmare. is this really a thread about who the back up PK and K are? and did you just pull an example from 1990?!
^ You don't know me enough? I'm known for useless thread, Bolo! Hey, I'm interested. Can't blame a guy for wanting to know useless stuff. Roby wasn't an Oiler until the 1996 season. I saw the practice where Matthews punted in 1994, I believe.
I though he was asking about who our emergency K and P would be. Just like Casey is our emergency QB should Schaub and Yates go down in the same game, who would kick if Shayne Graham pulled a Bill Gramatica in the middle of a game?
Actually Owen Daniels is the emergency backup QB. As was stated earlier, the punter and place kicker usually back themselves up. If one gets injured, the other will have to pick up the one's duties.
Yeah, Cannonball is right, but who backs up the punter holding for the field goals? Remind me of the GRAMATICA thing, sir. He got injured? You could look that up, man. You know the talk isn't about Roby or when the Oilers were here. "Don't make me get the hose!" (name that movie, difficulty: easy)
I'll make it even worse. Back in the seventies, QB Dan Pastorini WAS the punter and was backed up by the kicker Skip Butler some seasons. Other seasons, Butler was the kicker/punter and Pastorini backed him up. And in other seasons they had a punter that was backed up by Pastorini and Butler.
The most pathetic celebration ever with the possible exception of the Crygirl's Butch Johnson breaking his ankle celebrating a touchdown. <iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/JK81Ej5hm8s" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
this one is very pathetic too, he went for X-rays at halftime and missed the rest of the game. LOL <iframe width="480" height="360" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/MdWK-aam0Jo" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
james casey is the emergency holder. im sure both kickers are each others emergency.. like last year when hartmann got injured in the 2nd half... fortunately the texans didnt need to kick a punt the rest of the game.
Bruce Matthews was great at deep snapping too. I was excited when the Texans got Brian Cushing even though Clay Matthews was available. But my deepest worry was that the Matthews bloodline would result in Clay Matthews being a better player than Cushing. Those Matthews are/were iron men.
yup its the bloodline... given a chance at a re-draft you could still make a case for cushing over matthews... most would go the otherway, clay has performed on the big stage and is on every other tv commercial.. i feel elite ILBs are more important than elite OLBs. you can find pass rushers up and down the draft.. its tough to replace guys like willis, cushing, lewis.. one pass rusher does down there is usually 1-2 waiting behind him..
