It just seems very very unlikely to me. Someone would have to show me exactly how this could possibly happen where it makes sense for everyone involved. It seems like trades would have to happen and Butler would have to want to come to the Rockets.

Did the intended pursuit of a sign and trade free agent this summer impact the Rockets' decision to get under the tax, or at a minimum, move out Knight's contract to stay under the apron? Per Larry Coon:

The team receiving the player cannot be above the "Apron" (see question number 20) at the conclusion of the trade1, 2. A team above the Apron can receive a player in a sign-and-trade if the trade reduces the team's payroll and the team finishes the trade below the Apron.

A sign-and-trade for Butler would hard-cap the Rockets at the tax apron.

doesn't make any sense at all. jimmy wants $35M/yr are we going to send out capela and gordon? and won't we get hardcapped in a S&T? i guess tilman wouldn't be able to pay the lux tax then so that's a huge plus

Doesn't that only happen if you do a sign and trade if you're in the luxury tax? Pretty sure we got underneath it at the deadline.

I believe if the deal were to happen, JB would have to get traded and then opt in to his last year @19M. But giving JB a max at the age of 31 is risky

I feel the same. I'd like him, but it'd be hard to do and he might want to have his own team.

I still could see him and Boogie as the two NYK max deals.

Butler right now feels like one of those Blake Griffin John Wall Kemba Walker boat anchor contracts, just waiting to happen. How we make the math work, notwithstanding—resign Shumpert at the max then ship him to Philly with 4 future firsts for a sign and trade! ugh—this might be one of those Morey itches that we all root against getting scratched. Like Bosh, Parsons, Nene and Gasol, it might not be the first time Morey lucked into a non-move.
