Sonics Acquire Fortson in Exchange for Booth

The Seattle SuperSonics have acquired forward Danny Fortson from the Dallas Mavericks in exchange for center Calvin Booth, Sonics General Manager Rick Sund announced.

A 6-8 forward out of the University of Cincinnati, Fortson averaged 3.9 points and 4.5 rebounds in 56 games with the Mavericks last season.

"We're very happy to have Danny on board as part of our front court." said Sund. "In an effort to improve our rebounding, the addition of Danny, coinciding with Nick Collison returning from his injury, will enhance our physical toughness and defense. Ever since Danny came into the league he has been among the league leaders in rebounds per minute. His rebounding skills will help us tremendously."

Fortson, a seven-year veteran, has averaged 8.9 points and 8.0 rebounds in 341 NBA career games, including two seasons where he averaged double figures in both points and rebounds. Fortson ranked fourth in the league in rebounds per game during the 1998-99 (11.6) and 2001-02 (11.7) seasons.

Originally drafted by the Milwaukee Bucks in the first round (10th pick overall) of the 1997 NBA Draft, Fortson was traded to Denver on draft day along with Johnny Newman and Joe Wolf for Ervin Johnson.

Booth, a five-year veteran, signed with the Sonics as a free agent on Aug. 16, 2001. He averaged 4.3 points, 3.3 rebounds and 1.11 blocks in 133 career games with the Sonics. Originally selected by the Washington Wizards in the second round (35th pick overall) of the 1999 NBA Draft, Booth posted career averages of 4.6 points, 3.6 rebounds and 1.37 blocks in 199 NBA games.

So Booth is going to be their center....

He should be a good fill-in for the Mavs.

Both contracts are the same and for the same number of years. I think this is a good deal for Dallas. It at least gets a shot blocking presence it really didnt have.

So much for Booth in a deal with the Rockets. No mention of James or Potopeephole. (forgot his name!) I would guess one of them are on the trading block.

Well there goes the last shred of hope of Seattle possibly wanting Mo. They're not going to want Mo and Fortson eating up the cap unless Mullin becomes their GM in the near future.

Booth may be a bum but he was rumored to become our backup C and he would have been more than servicable.

This was part of the ADaniels/Booth for MoT trade we were all hopeful for.

This removes a backup C we can get.. our choices continue to dwindle.

    Another One Bites the dust

It never fails, talk about anyone on these posts as potential Rocket helpers and they get traded. Booth was traded to the Mavs for Fortson.

Thats because every signle player in the league has been talked about as a Rocket helper.

It has 100% chance of happening every time a trade is made. lol

It is kinda of depressing that we are drooling all over Booth, D. Jones and Mike James.

The same Calvin Booth(6 million a yr for the next 2 yr) who averaged 2.9 pts, 2.3 rebs, 0.7blk last year on a poor team that was desperate for a big man to show some life for them. We can do without that potential helper. I really think we're going to be ok.
