Something I Don't Understand about The End of the Draft

Don't like Euros?

 

The Euro picks are like lotto tickets. Most of the time, you dont win anything but there's a chance you could hit big. Any US player taken at the bottom of the 2nd round probably has a really low ceiling. You can sign those guys off the street and bring them to camp if you wanna take a look. Or pick them up in 2 years out of the D-League.

 

do you know Llull, Donats? they are foreign guys who developed their skills overseas.

It's kinda risky, but sometimes it gives high rewards. I'm sure Llull and Donats will be in the lottery next or this recent draft

 

Draft Euros so you have their rights whever they actually can possibly come over. These guys from USA that don't get drafted can be signed as free agents right away and the Euros cannot until they are out of contract. Essentially it is because you can't sign the rights to someone in free agency.

Buying low, selling high.

If they work out, fantastic. You develop them with out basically paying them. You draft these American guys, you have to put them on the roster and develop them, or send them to the dl, and you have to pay them and eat cap space.

Are second round picks guaranteed anything? Money wise? I thought no.

if you're a player, and getting invited to summer league, who cares? you either have game to make it or you don't. whether you are a second round pick or undrafted pick-up for summer league, you'll have to prove it.

 

Kevin Jones is a baller from what I saw.

 

I honestly think it is because the int'l players drafted at the bottom are starters or 6th man players in their country. They still get to run and hustle in their league; and some leagues are almost on par with the NBA. Basically, they get to be tested in the NBA, without being in the NBA. If that makes sense. The int'l guys already have spots on dedicated teams in their league.

Now, these domestic guys, while more proven / less raw than those int'l guys, won't see the light of day, even at the end of an NBA bench, when they first are drafted. And they won't be playing college ball again, so they can't play at a level mirroring the NBA like the int'l guys can.

I think that's the only reason, really. Int'l guys are put to the test when they're stashed, versus the domestic guys who only get to play in an NBA setting, really, when teams call them up for D-League or Summer League or whatever.

Being int'l usually > being domestic
because
Playing on dedicated competitive team > playing playground basketball waiting for NBA to call.

The undrafted local guys, you can just try them out in the summer league. the euro guys are already busy playing in euro, you draft them so you have their rights in case they blow up and develop into a good NBA player.

 

Don't forget Scola, and more recently Lior Eliyahu. People forget about him.

 

Teams like the Lakers and the Heat who can't afford to wait for guys to develop and have very big salaries to pay prefer foreigners in the 2nd round because they won't come over and take up roster spots and more importantly, do not count towards the cap until they come over.

That's why the end of the 2nd round if hilarious to watch, Adam Silver mangling congoese names that everyone knows will never come to the NBA.
