    China promised in an international treaty that HK would have democracy.

    They lied.

    Now they not only had taken away their freedoms but they even wanted to send any "criminal" without a trial to gulags where rampant organ harvesting has been going on.

    HKers had enough of this crap and demanded freedom of speech, privacy and democracy.
    Police reacted with brutality and violence from both sides escalated.

    This isn’t hard. Those in Hong Kong do not want to have their rights stripped to the bone. In mainland China they are used to having no rights and don’t know any better like a beaten wife.

    Keep coming up with convoluted alternative theories though... makes you feel a little better.
