Love how Astros are going to get a major penalty and the Red Sox and Yankees got a slap on the wrist for sign stealing using electronics in 2017.
Don’t want to kill MLB cash cows
It was a league wide problem according to many in 2017.

    sept. 2017...
Boston said to Major League Baseball it had evidence the Yankees used a YES Network camera to steal their signs.

Boston presented the Commissioner’s Office with video that allegedly showed a camera fixed on Red Sox bench coach Gary DiSarcina from a recent game at Yankee Stadium(from 2017)

both teams slapped on wrist that year.
    1. Red Sox using iWatch to steal signs in 2017
    2. Yankees using Yes network and also used a dugout phone.

Timing is everything. Leaking this story during the World Series would have been a gigantic distraction and possibly would have villanized the Athletic in terms of the mainstream media and fox.

this was likely always going to run after the season. I don’t think the Taubmann incident being handled better (or not happening) prevents a story of this magnitude especially since it’s breaking a past transgression.

That and the slant of the media blitz. I'm fine with out cheating the cheatin' yankees and cheatin' red soxs. If this turns out to be much more egregious than those teams or other teams then I'll re evaluate my position.

This article makes it sound very unlikely that the Astros could have been using cameras to steal signs this past season with the measures put in place by MLB.

So they already knew obviously from complaints by teams and likely other players. So why did Fiers feel the need to out them if the league was already taking measures to prevent it?

Fiers was merely the source that Drelich needed to confirm the suspicions.

The Athletic chose to investigate, construct, and eventually run this story... this wasn’t like Fiers came to them and said “I have a story for you!”
