Scola is tall enough for our needs. In that picture, it looks like he's an inch (if that...probably 1/2 inch) shorter than Oberto and Oberto played center for the Spurs. To put it into perspective, Chuck Hayes is 6'5 without shoes...6'6 1/2 with shoes. Udonis Haslem is 6'6 3/4 without shoes and 6'8" with shoes. I don't know why they let guys wear shoes as part of the measurements. Some of those reaboks can give you 2 inches easily. NBA players seem to fudge their heights quite a bit...some guys that are supposedly 6'10" don't look that much taller when they stand next to Tracy McGrady. Scola is easily at least 6'9" with shoes....probably more. I think he's probably closer to 6'9 1/2 because a lot of the official heights from international reports say that he's 6'9 1/2. When he stands next to Haslem next year, you'll see that Haslem's height is a little exaggerrated and that Scola is several inches taller. By the way, we can't lump all Euro players in one category. There are degrees of strengths. Scola plays in the best league in Europe and he was one of the best players. It's way better than Macabi.
So, like B-ball says....Scola is probably between 6'9 1/2 to 6'11 with shoes....depending on if the official height was based on shoes or without...I've read 20 different reports on him and all of them say that he's at least 6'9".
They are sportswriters -- not actual writers. Where art thou Grantland Rice? For when the One Great Scorer comes to mark against your name, He writes -- not that you won or lost -- but how you played the Game.
Although you are right when you say the Spanish league is better than the Israeli one, Maccabi Tel Aviv is one of the strongest Teams in Europe. Its historically a bigger club than Tau Ceramica (Scola's Team). And Tau Ceramica with Scola, lost the a semifinal (2005/2006) and a final (2004/2005) of the Euroleague against Maccabi (with Anthony Parker, Maceo Baston and Jasikevicius, who are now in the NBA).
Exactly, Oberto should be about 6-10 barefoot and Scola about 6-9 1/2 barefoot. So again, people think of Oberto as more of a power forward/center because he's listed at 6-10 using NBA comparisons people are thinking he'd be an undersized center, but because it's a barefoot listing, he's really more like a 6-11 guy or even a 7-0 guy how some NBA players get 2 more inches of height in their listings and really more closer to a center. Also there was a FIBA competition listing that listed Scola at 245 pounds, which is up from previous listings that had him at 230 pounds or 233 pounds. So let's just figure as a comparison to most American NBA players, the listing for arguments sake to get an idea of how big he would be if you made the measurements more equal, then Scola is around 6-10 or even 6-11 (shoes) and 245 pounds. So think of it this way, he's around Amare size would probably be the best way to think of it.
Actually, despite all the speculating about his height and weight, we won't know whether he is a player until late November or December. I'm betting that he will be the new darling of the Toyota Center. Chuck Hayes will discover that his fleeting moment of fame has fled.
Your analysis makes me feel good. If Scola is around 6'10", 6'11"...then we have the big power forward that we've been yearning for. By the way, have you watched Oberto standing next to Duncan? How much taller is Duncan than Oberto? I suspect that Duncan is closer to 6'11" than the "7 footer" announcers like to say he is. Also, KG is a lot taller than 6'11" because he seems to be taller than guys listed at that height and closer to the height of Shaq when they stand next to each other. I wish the NBA would clean up all these exaggerated heights.
Yeah, his energetic style will make him a fan favorite....he'll be kind of our Moose Johnson--the way the fullback Daryl Moose Johnson was for the Cowboys. Francis and Brooks might become pretty popular too.
I already thought I was the only one whose eyes were hurting when seeing this thread title. I had thought that the thread starter made the mistake...but SI? Embarrassing...
Yep, and the only one with a world champion title. That makes him even excel Y and M. Or the world of basketball is crazy...
Yes he can, rookie means that has't played an nba game, so the rookie of the year could be drafted in 1950 for all we care just as long as he hasn't played a game in the NBA.
To answer the question about his height Scola is exactly 6'8 3/4" without shoes so pretty much 6'9". In case anyone is wondering this is the height of some current Rockets according to pre-draft measurements Steve Francis 6'2 1/2" Rafer Alston 6'1 3/4" Tracy McGrady 6'6 1/4" Bonzi Wells 6'5" Shane Battier 6'8 1/4" Chuck Hayes 6'5 1/4" Yao Ming 7'5" Dikembe Mutombo 7'1"
Pretty much...Dwight Howard is only 6'9" barefoot. Some big men are listed at their barefoot heights...Shaq was measured 7'1" without shoes, Chris Bosh was measured 6'10 1/4" and Kevin garnett is 6'11 1/4" Scola has legit NBA power forward size though.
