The Knicks haven't been able to make the playoffs the last three seasons and it doesn't look good for them this year, either. Melo's numbers have gotten progressively worse each and every year since coming to the Knicks. He's maybe the worst defender in the league, doesn't pass the ball, he just takes very bad shots most of the time right in the face of a defender. It's clear this guy is not focused on winning or leading a team anywhere, just collecting paychecks at this point. What a shame, he was a very talented player and at one point people use to compare him to Lebron in terms of ability and potential. Lately, it seems like his career has just fallen off a cliff. As a Rockets fan, I'm glad we dodged a bullet by not signing this guy two off seasons ago, I'm also very thankful we have James Harden who is one of the most unselfish players in the league.
Melo isn't even a competent basketball player anymore. He knows his basketball legacy is basically feces so he does the Olympic thing to try to feel better about himself. He should call it quits and spend more time with his family.
I agree. I mean, it has to be pretty embarrassing for him to be seen in public anywhere in N.Y right now. He's already had a serious talk with Phil and Hornacek several times now. Surely, he can't be serious.
You cut off Giannis' third leg and it would be more valuable to the Rockets than Melo. Giannis' third leg can do it all dribble, shoot, pass. It's up to the league to allow this to happen.
I think it's his last season of the contract. The Knicks are not interested in extending anything and rightfully so. Melo is toast with his egotistical attitude and game. He's done.
Yeah but these are the Knicks we're talking about here, man. The same team that paid Luc Longley like $100 million dollars when the dude only played 10 games for them.
Yeah had he came to the Rockets we would have built around him to compensate for the things he's not good at, just like we did with Harden. It's a mixture of things, like him not being able elevate his game (such as defense, better shot selection, a conscious effort to get the whole team involved) to reach his true potential much like have we seen with LeBron, Harden, and other stars. Plus not every organization has a great GM like Morey. Carmelo is not even that explosive driving to the bucket anymore....he has to expand his game to survive, the league has changed and he's having trouble adjusting. Triangle offense with Melo and Phil as coach could have worked, not as team President. It seems his game has been reduced to mid range jumps, and low block post ups. This was a short concise assessment from my perspective. It could have been more thorough but I was trying to make a few good points posting from my phone and almost wrote a article.
He is making : 16-17 : 24.5 mil 17-18 : 26.2 mil 18-19 : 27.9 mil (Melo's option) His dead money value is $78,731,280 - the amount the Knicks need to pay him just to outright release him. And anyone want to ask a guy in his situation to walk away from this payout?
The top 3 free agents signing events/pursuits in the Morey era that defined his legacy. - Bosh - Melo - Bazemore
No, I was under the impression that this was the last year of his contract. The OP is thinking he should retire after his contract is up. I agree.
The thread title was meant to be a rhetorical question, obviously we know that Melo isn't going to retire after this year but he would be doing the Knicks and the NBA a huge service if he did.
i don't mind melo sticking around in the nba. even better if he and his contract goes to dallas and stay there for the next decade.
He'd be great on the Kings, he fits their stat padding mentality and selfish style of play. Melo's defense is just as poor as Gay's but he's a much better scorer. A roster with Cousins and Melo could actually make some noise in the west. Maybe they could even get Rondo back
