This doesn't surprise me at all. I don't care if this was season 1 for Kelly. The 49ers were so dismal they had to cut bait with both guys. IMO, Chip Kelly and Arizona State could be a good match. I think the 49ers should hire a GM and allow that person to choose a coach.
I thought the first few years with the Eagles were good, then he made all these trades and change of personnel . The 49ers sucked, that was a doomed job for anybody.
Really one year? That's on the organization but yea Chip nvr had a counter punch. The league adjusted and he was stagnant.
I'm not convinced Kelly will hit the ground running after returning to college. Colleges have adjusted to tempo just like the NFL. His shtick is no longer novel because everyone has adapted to it.
He can attract top High Schoolers. His name means a lot in recruiting and he deserves another chance in college. I would trust him to lead a program over an unknown commodity in Applewhite.
I'm not convinced that teams "adjusted" to tempo as much as he didn't have the talent to run an effective system. That's his fault for his time in Philly as he was a bad GM, but it doesn't negate his offensive prowess.
Agreed. He had too much faith in the system and didn't realize the importance of talent (McCoy, Desean Jackson, not Sam-Bradford-as-QB). In the right situation, I think his offense can still be dominant. Why he took the 49ers job (where there was zero talent), I have no idea.
Maybe for older fans that followed him at Oregon. But 4 years is a long time to be away from CFB and these kids would've been 12-13 years old at the time. But ya he would've been better hire than Applewhite even though he would've bolted the first shot he got.
Saying you trust Kelly over Applewhite is saying absolutely nothing. Who knows how well he can recruit? I think it's an open question. My point is tempo, by itself, isn't as effective as it used to be because defenses are more prepared for it. Kelly's offensive sets and play calls at Oregon weren't very sophisticated or unique. They did a lot of the same things over and over again with precise execution. The key for them was tempo regularly created gaps in the D-line they could exploit for big plays.I'm not sure that works as well now. With Mariota, they opened up the passing game and it raised them to a another level. Chip Kelly is also a bit of a flake, even by college football coach standards. His act may not work at a lot of places. It seemed he mellowed out a bit in the NFL so maybe that carries on.
they are beating the Seahawks now, and it's an important game for Seattle. they fired their last coach after 1 year. it's clearly on the GM. They shouldn't have fired Harbaugh, even if Harbaugh slapped the GM and screwed his wife
It was probably the worst offseason in the history of sports. Ok, maybe that's a hyperbole but it was stupid firing Harbaugh It's not like Kaep sucked:
I don't think Chip got a fair shot. He should at least get another season to get the guys he wants in there . But the bigger issue was management. You fire a coach that led you to the Super Bowl cause he bumped heads with executives? His job is to win games
Texans wanted Prescott! 49ers wanted Prescott! This team wanted Prescott! That team wanted Prescott! STOPPPP. 32 teams passed on him three times, some four. He went 5 picks before the beginning of the 5th. We wanted him! We really wanted him! We really liked him!
