First, thanks to durvasa for turning me onto the StatsCube at nba.com, so I could produce splits by quarter.

I've felt all season long that Scola's production is mainly in the 1st half. We will get him off at the beginning of games (much like Rudy did with Maurice Taylor), but then he disappears in the 2nd half.

Is it by design (as MoT was) or tired legs.

However, I didn't expect to see this huge of a drop off. Look at those %s. Also, it's curious that his REB% is at or above his career ave, but overall rebounds are way down. That must be the Dalembert effect.

RED >= 10% below career average
GREEN >= 10% above career average

Oh, each quarter is for per 36 minutes, to make more comparable.

We should only play Scola 2 quarters, that's all his stamina will allow him to do. Obviously.

^^ Oh, each quarter is in per 36 minutes, to make more comparable. I accidentally multiplied the minutes to. Let me edit the real minutes back in.

as patterson gets better scolas min should reduce to 28-30 min of effective play a night. Pls morey get a decent backup C so scola doesn't have to.
how's yao's foot? Can he contribute 15-20 min every other game?

It's nice seeing stats backing up the eye test.

People need to be more patient with Scola. Even with stats and careful reflection, the small sample size leaves all if this analysis in the realm of knee jerk.

Also, Scola suffers from a well known seasonal slump that has affected him for his entire career. Doesn't it start around Christmas and end pretty soon?

How do those rates deviate from an average PF's rates for each quarter? Any evidence to support defenses being tighter in the 4th quarter, for example?

    blunto,

Good question. Mabye the nba tool will do entire league averages. That would be interesting. The red shows how it deviates from Scola's career averages. Best I can do.

I remember that when Landry was the sixth man Scola was severely questioned about not showing up in the fourth qtr -Landry was one of the league leaders in 4th qt scoring- then Landry got traded and Scola had that chip on his shoulder and he started performing better. Maybe he has regressed into old habits, for the most part he has looked worse this year in those situations. although along with him the whole team offense looks discombobulated in the 4th and it's a problem we've had for several years now.

Great table. The drop in shooting %'s is crazy. especially considering his rebounding stays the same, if not goes up. Sure, rebounding isn't as precise as shooting, but it does require energy? Scola seems to come out of halftime a rebounding machine (for him), but his shooting drops off a cliff.

It has something to do with the Corioliss effect and the fact that he is from south of the equator.

    Great thread, HP.

Without looking at the numbers, intuition tells me that if the league-wide scoring average is about the same for all quarters, then the "tighter defense" argument shouldn't hold water unless the argument is that teams begin to change their defensive strategies by packing the paint in the last quarter.

I have noticed that Scola usually comes out shooting (and making) right out the gate. Then he begins to drop off. in the 2nd quarter. He used to give us some clutch baskets down the stretch and maybe because of that, I didn't really notice his poor performance in the 4th.

This seems to confirm the theory that his declining production this year is the result of fatigue.

Scola and hill for landry. Patterson gets to start, landry off the bench, plus landry expires at the end of the yr.
