It's crazy to me that anyone would assume Sam Cassell is a superior coach to D'Antoni. What has he proven?
I tend to agree that the fascination with hiring ex-players is absurd. And yet, there's a precedent...
It is equal to the fascination with hiring Nerds and mathematician We need both. We got the best nerd. Now get the best ex player. Rocket River
As long as Morey is the GM of this team, I only want a proven defensive coach in charge. Morey will not let any coaches change our offense too drastically so that means the coach must know how teams play defense in 2020.
“As long as Morey is the GM...” I fear that DM the GM’s tenure is as tenuous as MDA’s going forward, short of playing well into June.
Limit your coaching candidate pool is restricted to people who once played for your team is like limiting your wife candidate pool to your cousins. Rudy is one of the few coaches in NBA history to play for a team, then coach it to a title.
My "problem" isn't hiring ex-players. It's the team-specific..."Let's hire the ex-Rocket, the ex-Astro!" Maybe the Bulls should hire MJ as coach or GM! GOAT! Great, Rudy T did it so Sam Cassell will too! Why have teams not interviewed Cassell? If Cassell never played for the Rockets, would you say "Yeah, let's hire him! He's the guy to turn this ship around!" Seems unlikely.
It has little to do with Sam being an ex rocket People are framing it that way Maybe I fell for it But Sam is simply the best person for the job Imo He has the best mix of coaching and player experience. The automatic assumption that someone without any playing experience is better or smarter is crap. Rocket River
Who's assuming THAT? I haven't seen anyone in this thread suggest that coaches who never played are better. This is about the people who are so eager to pick a new coach only from former Rockets players. That's just emotional, nostalgic nonsense.
I don't now what kind of coach Sam is or if he knows his head from his butt, but I don't want to go hiring head coaches just because they happen to have played for the Rockets. It's kind of a shame Nick Nurse was in the organization, but we missed out on giving him a shot. Not saying he could've done anything better with this group, but I'm of the opinion that if we get rid of the coach, we better also start thinking about blowing this mess up.
There are no safe bets Don't need another retreat. Being an Ex Rocket should not disqualify him. Rocket River
could be a good young mind in the game. He’s been an assistant for years and this may be his big break. Mark Jackson is still out there. I contend The issue is how the team is ran from top down. The analytics, style of play, personnel selection. This starts with morey, exec VP operations etc. Draft picks wasted, assets traded, Star chasing instead of sound free agent signings, draft, sound player development and scouting. Think about it.
Riles Russell, Heinson, K.C. Cunningham Attles quickly off top of my addle pated pate and, of course, LBJ!
