[Ryan Bernardoni] Kings could be setting up to take Ryan Anderson

    https://hoopshype.com/2018/07/18/sacramento-kings-houston-rockets-ryan-anderson-trade-rumors/

It was hard to understand why the Sacramento Kings traded Garrett Temple to the Memphis Grizzlies. But a deeper dive may help explain it.

Kevin O’Connor contextualized the otherwise strange trade for Sacramento (via The Ringer):

“It opens up cap space for the Kings where now they have $20.5 million in cap space and that’s notable. Because I’ve recently heard … Houston would be looking for a team to dump Ryan Anderson on that could ease the path to sign Carmelo Anthony.”

ESPN’s Zach Lowe reported last month that Sacramento was planning to use their cap space to reportedly “extract draft picks” in exchange for players like Anderson, who are overpaid by their team.

The Kings could be angling to sign Anthony outright, who would receive plenty of playing time in Sacramento considering the team isn’t ready to compete at a high level. However, it seems unlikely that Anthony would want to join a non-playoff team (which is why he’s been linked to the Rockets and Los Angeles Lakers mainly).

Adding Anthony would also be very questionable for Sacramento since he’d potentially stunt the development of their young players by taking the ball out of their hands. The idea of Anderson on the roster is less worrisome, though.

Anderson is a less ball-dominant player and averaged just 7.3 field goal attempts per game last season, compared with Anthony’s 15.0 per game. As the Kings currently rebuild their roster, they are looking to stockpile assets. Acquiring another draft pick from Houston (in exchange for taking back Anderson’s contract) could help them moving forward.

It’s worth mentioning that Anderson is originally from Sacramento and went to college in Northern California at UC Berkeley. The front office was reportedly interested in signing him back in 2016.

He was also linked to the franchise in 2012 and “really liked” what he saw from the team. He has received standing ovations from the crowd when he has returned to play against his hometown team.

Anderson has made no secret of his childhood rooting interest, stating that the organization meant everything to the city. Even if the main incentive is for the Kings to receive a draft pick back from the Rockets, adding Anderson is a nice little bonus for the fans too.

Or they could be ready to make an offer to a free agent they would like to have play for them.

Clutch fans has already determined that the kings have $20.5 in cap space and Ryan Anderson hits at $20.4

Should shut people up about Morey "doing something" if true.

Then they'll complain about how much was given up to offload him though. So pick your poison.

I hope not. If they take Ryno, Houston will have to give up something for it. I understand this saves Rockets $, but it does nothing for them from a basketball perspective. I'd rather have Ryno on the team, playing whatever role he makes most sense in, and wait to see if his value changes next year when he becomes an expiring contract, either in the summer or at the deadline.

If Morey comes out of this off season with Melo, Ennis, and dumping Anderson, resigning Paul and Clint he wins the houdini of the year award.

As a fan, it doesn't really do anything for me compared to keeping Anderson and signing Melo. Anderson doesn't really hurt us that much anymore, it only hurts y'alls boy Ferttita at this point.

Anderson's contract is an albatross that will hurt this team more than any late first round pick would help. If Morey sheds this contract, we are out of one of the worst deals in the league.

Yeah, as long as we have some plan for PF besides Melo. But the Anderson contract is such an albatross.

How much does dumping Ryno save Tilman in tax payments? A player this useless just chillin on the roster is a hard pill to swallow.

Tilman probably asking why he’s paying all this money for a guy who’s trash for 41 home games and the playoffs

The quickest way to get this trade to go through is to tell Vlade he owes us picks for Anderson.

It makes no sense for the Rockets to just dump Anderson's contract. It doesn't do anything to help them get better players this year. But something that can work is in a 3-way setting, something like Anderson to the Kings, capspace to the Cavs, and Korver/JR Smith to the Rockets. Where the Cavs and the Rockets give some assets to the Kings to facilitate the trade. Not saying Korver and JR are what the Rockets would want, but that's the type of trade where Kings taking on the Anderson contract can work.
