But you had to factor in that Kobe and Melo were NOT suited for this offense. They are both narcissistic players. They want their shots and their spotlight. MDA's system only works when you can have selfless play to a large extent. I was unsure how James would adapt with his repetitive ISO's last year. But so far, he's seeing the benefits of dishing and spreading the floor. Leaves him MORE room to operate Also, knowing how many 3's we jacked up last season, I was excited to have a REAL system in place to let those 3's flow freely with P&R's and motion, etc. . Last season's offense was basically street ball and improv. Way to go Coach!
By the way, in many of our defense, I think what many of us were annoyed with the MDA hire was the fact that we badly needed defense and second, Morey for years failed to put proper shooters and playmakers to allow the system he wanted to run to work. It was just real hard envisioning that Mike D was going to make a difference without having the type of players he needed for his system. We all knew that Durant was not coming here and I feel that many of us knew that Morey would waste time on Durant and lose out on other players waiting for a decision. Even though Durant did not come here, we do owe him and his agent a huge thank you for letting the Rockets know ahead of time that he was not interested in Houston and would not be meeting with us. This allowed Morey to actually focus on other players, rather than wasting time like in years past. Plus, we still had Howard on the roster and many of us were concerned that he would opt in or re-sign with Houston. I was on the bandwagon of addition by subtraction, even though I liked Howard.
Mike D'Antoni hired June 1st 2016, Eric and Ryan weren't signed until July. I think most people didn't see our roster of last year meshing with MDA. However, I will say I did not expect us to be this good, current roster in all, at the beginning of the season. My expectations were 6-8th seed.
