[Chron] Les Alexander plans to extend Morey’s contract

No surprise here. Also reiterates what Morey’s been saying about no major deal being in the works for the upcoming trade deadline.

With the Rockets retooling exceeding his expectations, Rockets owner Leslie Alexander said he will not let the contract of general manager Daryl Morey expire after next season.

Though he typically has not worked on one contract until the previous deal is complete, Alexander said he intends to re-sign Morey.

“His contract is up next year, I believe,” Alexander said. “We’ll re-up him. Daryl knows that I judge him all the time. I’ve told him. He’s not shy about it either. He just knows that’s the way I operate. Why wouldn’t I? The general manager is the one person in your organization you can really judge. He can make good moves or bad moves. This year, I think he’s made three terrific moves.”

Alexander said the decision to trade for James Harden, along with the moves to acquire the pieces that set up that deal and free agent additions of Jeremy Lin and Omer Asik convinced him to keep Morey beyond his current contract.

The next step could be even more difficult, with the Rockets hoping to add a second elite player. Several individuals familiar with the Rockets’ thinking said earlier on Saturday that there is no trade on the table to consider prior to Thursday’s trade deadline and that any deal made is more likely to temporarily use the Rockets available cap space to acquire an additional draft pick than for a major piece.

The Rockets will carefully guard their salary cap flexibility to be able to maneuver in free agency with the hopes to acquire a second top-level star the goal.

“I think it’s maybe easier in a way because players want to play with James,” Alexander said. “That’s an attraction we didn’t have before. They like the city. All players like the city.

“The unfortunate part of being in the NBA as opposed to baseball or football are there are very few moving parts. There aren’t a lot of players on each team and there aren’t a lot of great players on each team. There’s only 75, 80 terrific players in the league and most of them are under contract. The NBA is a very difficult place for us to maneuver. For us to get three terrific players this year is a terrific feat in this league. We’re going to try to get better obviously. What we’ll accomplish, I don’t know because it’s very difficult.”

He did know, however, who he wanted to do it.

Common sense. Morey's done a great job rebuilding the franchise in wake of the Mac-Yao era, and keeping us competitive at the same time! One of the best gMs in the league. We are very Lucky! Good thing Les knows it. And he's got the perfect mix of dorky and cool! In Morey we Trust!
