Don't forget that he became union president and has spent years working the negotiations to create the contract language that he can finally take advantage of. He and Lebron are the two players that the entire thing was built around. The over 35 rule being changed was about THEM. It's really hard to believe he'll pass on it after all the work he put into it.

definitely true. Moving the over-36 rule back two years to over-38 allows Paul to sign a full, 5-yr Max with his incumbent teams, without spreading the cap hit of his last year (age 37) over the first 4yrs. That over-36 rule essentially prevented him from getting Max, because his salary (plus the spread) has to fit under the Player Max ceilings.

However, the previous over-36 rule was never going to have any effect on Paul switching teams. That's because switching teams has a maximum contract length of 4yrs, rather than 5yrs. So, there would never be that over-36 year on that contract. The rule change was only to protect resigning with LAC to a full Max at full 5-yrs.

That said, if he can change that rule, why not. But I doubt it meant that he was never going to look at other teams for a full Max at 4yrs....which never required the rules change.

Right, but he helped get the rule so he COULD sign the max 5 year deal with LAC. For him to leave would mean he'd walk away from the 5 year max that he worked hard to set up for himself.

Yes, if he can change it, why not add that extra option of staying in LAC.

But, that could also have been to stay *if* LAC remained a contender. We might be reading it (and I did as well), that it meant Paul was definitely staying for that 5th year. Maybe his thinking was "Why not change it if I can? But if LAC slides and GSW becomes a superteam I might need to look for a 4yr Max somewhere else to compete."

Maybe Paul is not as keen on SA as everythinks he is or should be. Leonard is great but they are old outside of that. Not to mention it would be like KD-lite on the coat tail riding. Plus get to play For Dantoni and a younger core.

If we are gutting the team to sign Paul there is no "core" here in Houston. It's Paul/Harden then reset button lol.

It would be the same in SA. His choice is Harden/D'Antoni vs Kawhi/Pop essentially.

Pretty sure all scenarios involve Gordon and Capela staying...at least Bima's scenarios.

But, we'd have to gut the team for a 3rd superstar.

Right, I'm just saying there is no "young core" vs "old San Antonio" debate here. We would have to rebuild the roster after we signed Chris Paul, so basically he would only be playing with Harden and Capela for sure from the current team with some other holdovers but no clue who. San Antonio roster is basically the same type situation except they also still have Pau.

I mean it really goes without saying that the 5th year is not that big of a deal when you compare net pay over 4 years in Texas. Paul at 36 can still make money back on that fifth year. Look at Pau, TD, Dirk, etc

He can stay in LA and lose or he can lure a third guy with Harden and try to win a title. Really contend v pretend in the last few meaningful years of his playing career.

Not so sure about that. He has injury concerns every year, and those build up and as he ages, he may not be a good starter in the league. And second, I still think the Spurs can offer more winning and utilize his skillset better. Spurs would still be sizable underdogs.

Also, Rockets don't have that young of a core, we got some veterans here and coming back.

With your mentality, you should root for a team like Charlotte that never even tries. Know better than to get your hopes up? How devastated are you by free agents choosing to go elsewhere that you are afraid to even acknowledge possibility? People get rejected for jobs and dates all the time in real life and don't take it this personally. You don't get bonus points for being hopeless, so cut that crap out.

Chris Paul and James Harden on a team may be the most hated team in NBA history. We're gonna get called the worst punkass b**** pussyflopping wizard's sleeve dragass **** stunt mother****ing **** ***** ****s that ever set foot on the basketball court. Adam Silver's gonna drop us unceremoniously from the ceiling to stomp some pretender team in the first round, only to get shamefully beaten down by GSW in round 2.

Face it, the NBA is the WWF, and Houston are the heels.
