I didn't realize what a great guitarist he was until I saw the documentary "The Wrecking Crew" on Netflix. https://www.netflix.com/title/70105364 He was one of a group of studio musicians that played on hundreds of albums in the 60's and 70's until he broke out on his own.
Yeah he was at his peak one of the 2-3 best guitar players in the world. He was a guitar player first and foremost. He wasn't always a good guy.... he did a lot of bad things but the last decade of his life he tried to make amends. Probably would have been better off remaining a session guitarist because he couldn't handle excesses at all.
A lot of people don't know that he was more or less a Beach Boy, too. Glen Campbell's was the first music I ever remember hearing as a youngin', like 4yo. There's been a load of compromising on the road to my horizon, but I'm gonna be where the lights are shining on me...
Watched his show every week. Campbell and Jimmy Webb were responsible for some of the greatest songs. In fact, webb referred to Campbell as the American Beatle.
I could close my eyes and listen to this all night. I'm seriously going to shed a tear when Roy passes away : Roy & Glen again (this one is hilariously incredibly impressive) : Alice Cooper and Glen Campbell were good friends... I never knew this. Speaks of what a great guitarist he was. Good interview to listen to :
Yeah, I didn't know he was such a virtuoso guitar player. I saw him picking (and grinning) on Hee Haw as a kid, but I guess it never clicked. I also remember watching his variety shows. Man, I miss variety shows.... Everyone knows Rhinestone Cowboy, but Galveston was probably my favorite song by him. To this day, it always comes to my head as I'm driving over the big bridge. Ironic that it was originally an anti-war song but is now the official theme song of the island. Southern Nights was also a great tune.
Too true. Glen was a genuine talent, one of those that you recognized instantly when you heard his voice on the radio. We sure seem to be losing a lot of voices and players from the past. Time doesn't care. Time simply continues, running us all down, eventually.
Saw him in Branson 25 years ago not only did he play the guitar but played Amazing Grace on bagpipes.
My Mom loved Glen....I remember this echoing throughout the house as a kiddo (we must have played this record a million times)... : )
I had no idea how excellent he was at shredding. He must have been one of the first...and in country no less. I was just thinking what if he went the rock route? Rock would have had it made. Just the skill and talent level is immense.
Glen was seriously one of the 2-3 best guitar players in the world for a long time. He already had made it as a professional guitar player when he became a star singer. His personal problems are what kept him from not being as big a household name the last 30 years. That and a lot of people in the business went from loving to work with him to finding him out of control in the 70's-90's.
