[Ric Bucher] "Steve Nash probably is No. 1" in trade rumors

ESPN NBA analyst Ric Bucher told NBA Today Podcast host Ryen Russillo Monday afternoon that Phoenix Suns point guard Steve Nash’s name is swirling around the trade rumor mill.

In fact, when Russillo asked for some potential names been mentioned in trade rumors other than Carmelo Anthony, Bucher answered emphatically: “Steve Nash. Steve Nash probably is No. 1.”

Here’s what Bucher said about the Nash rumors:

“I personally feel like I may have overestimated where they are, my belief in Nash to take any spare parts and make it work. I may have overestimated that.

They just don’t have what they had previously and the feeling is that you’re going to have a distinct two camps (in the Western Conference), the haves and the have-nots. Depending on where Phoenix is and in which camp, they may say ‘you know what we need to go in a different direction.’ If you’re going to move Steve Nash, you have to move him now rather than late to get something out of him.

It’s tricky because again we’re talking about a business decision and Steve Nash is a great draw in Phoenix and he’d be a great draw anywhere.”

Trading Nash, who is scheduled to make $22 million over the next two seasons, would mean basically mailing it for the season and moving away from the Nash era and toward the Goran Dragic and Robin Lopez era.

It’s hard to say if this rumor actually has any legs, as we knew Nash rumors would come up at some point. But to hear that from a source like Bucher this early in the season says a lot about how realistic of an option dealing Nash truly is.

Gentry was pretty straight foward earlier today that Nash wasn't going anywhere but I have to believe it's only a matter of time before he's moved.

I've never been a huge Raymond Felton fan. I think Knicks fans are figuring out why. Gotta believe the Knicks will pull out all the stops to try to land Steve Nash. He's not a long-term solution, but in the short term a reuniting with D'Antoni and Stoudemire should be great. Would Suns take a combo of Felton, Curry expiring contract and Gallinari? Probably not, but it's worth asking about.

Is Nash really on the block, or is that just heresay?

From my calls around the league, I think it's more conjecture at this point. The Suns don't look like a playoff contender in the early going and Nash is the one asset they have that could get them something important in return. But I've yet to talk to a league source inside or outside the Suns who has told me they know Nash is available. But I understand the thinking and wouldn't be shocked if he was wearing a different uniform in February.

If the Suns take that pile of garbage offer from the Knicks I will be furious. Surely someone will offer something of substance.

I'm not huge on trying to bring him here, but I'd offer Brooks, a pick, and some filler.

He doesn't really have a choice.

Sure, he can threaten to leave in the offseason, but as long as we don't sell the farm for him I don't think it's going to set us back to rent him this season and then let him go in the offseason. If nothing else, maybe we could sign and trade him in the offseason for a little compensation.
