ive been thinking that reliant could use some giant led scoreboards at each endzone... didnt think they were even considering this..

it will complete the trifecta..

Was at the Ravens game and was just thinking that we need a big upgrade to our big screen. Completely forgot about this.

HOUSTON (FOX 26) - Houston Texans owner Bob McNair believes Reliant Stadium needs a new state-of-the-art digital scoreboard as the City of Houston attempts to land Super Bowl LI in 2017.

McNair points out that Reliant Stadium, which will be 15 years old in 2017, is the only NFL stadium that does not have a digital scoreboard.

Houston is one of two finalists to land Super Bowl LI.

The NFL's owners will vote on who gets the 50th and 51st Super Bowls in May.

The 50th will go to either San Francisco or South Florida, with the loser taking on Houston for Super Bowl LI.

McNair spoke with the Houston media following a luncheon by the Greater Houston Partnership.

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell was the keynote speaker.

Upgrading Reliant Stadium could play a key role in Houston's bid.

"Our scoreboards need to be replaced," McNair said. "We don't have digital scoreboards. We're the last team in the league now that doesn't have a digital scoreboard.

That's something that we're working on. I think that will happen. Those are the kinds of things that we have to look at."

McNair also believes the situation involving the Astrodome needs to be addressed as part of the effort to have the best bid possible.

"We need to come to a conclusion as to what's going to be done with the Astrodome," McNair said. "It's not a pretty sight sitting there now and it's noticeable and people comment on it. So we need to make those decisions and move on.

"The better the facilities are that we can make available to the league, the more attractive Houston is as a (Super Bowl) site."

There is already movement from those in leadership positions on the Reliant Stadium scoreboard upgrades and McNair's comments on the Astrodome will certainly renew the debate.

"There is a meeting that is tentatively scheduled to discuss the enhancements that might need to be considered in order to make sure that we have the best chance at winning the bid for Super Bowl LI and I just can't imagine that discussion happening without some discussion about the Astrodome," said Willie Loston, executive director of the Harris County Sports and Convention Corporation, landlord of Reliant Park.

Mark Miller, general manager of SMG-Reliant Park, said initial studies show costs of an upgraded scoreboard at Reliant Park to be anywhere from $10 to $30 million.

"There are a lot of conversations going on about that right now," Miller said. "We're working collectively to try to find the best solution for funding.

"Some of it could come from state funds if the Super Bowl is a possibility."

Miller said the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo is taking the lead on getting the pricing information for the scoreboard.

Meanwhile, Commissioner Goodell was enthusiastic in his support for Houston to land another Super Bowl while speaking at the luncheon hosted by the Greater Houston Partnership.

"He encouraged us to go ahead and submit a bid and he thinks that Houston should have another Super Bowl and of course the owners are the ones that make that decision with their votes, but he's supportive of Houston having another Super Bowl," McNair said.

"Hopefully it will be the 51st."

Goodell does not have a vote on which cities land Super B owls, but he certainly has tremendous influence with the league's owners.

"I think you guys are going to put together a great bid," Goodell said. "Hopefully, we'll be back here soon for a Super Bowl."
