Referees to engage fans on Twitter during Game 3 of Finals

CLEVELAND -- NBA referees will take to Twitter during Game 3 of the Finals on Wednesday night to engage fans in real time and plan to address specific plays and interpret rules.

The discussion is being facilitated by the National Basketball Referees Association and will be done from its Twitter account, @OfficialNBARefs. The referees will take questions using the hashtag #RefWatchParty. There will be a team of referees answering the questions, but they will not be identified individually.

The NBA league office is not a part of this event.

During the playoffs, the referees' union has used social media to respond to controversial calls and give the officials' point of view and rule interpretations. It is part of a larger strategy to connect fans more to the referees.

Earlier this season, the NBRA released mini documentaries where fans who were angry about calls met with officials after games and interacted with the referees explaining the calls.

During the All-Star break, the NBRA arranged a meeting with leadership from the players' union, and the two sides have worked to create communication channels between them.

As for the game itself, veteran referees Marc Davis, Zach Zarba and John Goble have been assigned to officiate with Eric Lewis as the alternate.

Anybody have any questions about game 6&7 for the NBA refs? Like why was Scott Foster picked to rig game 7? Why did the calls start coming after we got leads?

I'm sure you have some pretty good ones. I hope you ask and let us know their answers. ;)

They will be trolled so hard. Not sure if this is a good idea.

I would ask them to count how many steps LeBron takes per drive to the hoop. My guess is they think he walks on water, and therefore doesn't really step but floats his way to the basket.

can they explain how harden getting slapped on the arm while in air shooting a 3 wasn't a foul? or how moving while setting a screen isn't a moving screen?

i'm still pissed at the nba and the refs in general lol

I would simply ask them why they never addressed any of the officiating for Games 6 & 7 of the WCF....specificaly the viral video posted in Clutchfans showing 9 separate calls that are in question?

117k views on one video. 111k views on the other one. Those are just the ones I'm aware of.

    minor detail!

this is just an attempt by the nba to maintain the warriors image on social media. too many complaints that they play 8 vs 5 with the refs in their pocket. can't have their legacy tarnished so lets explain to the fans why when you touch steph or kd its a foul based on the literal interpretation of the rules, but when you think they made a foul you're wrong due to some obscure interpretation of a barely related rule about positioning, angles, gathering, movement, timing etc...

    don't fall for it!

Also found this one in which former official Ronnie Nunn rates the calls. Interesting, but he's such an apologist for NBA officials its sickening.

Likelihood of a large number of people getting blocked by that Twitter account during the game is 99.9%.

But seriously I strongly doubt they will actually respond to people during the game. This will just be used to send out the tame/league approved responses.

As an aside, does anyone notice none of the “controversial” refs (Brothers/Foster, etc.) are officiating tonight’s game? This game may be called relatively evenly.

They were assigned to this twitter effort.

lulz -- Their Official Twitter already took down an ESPN video, that they first promoted, while getting Jalen Rose's name wrong.

This is the one game that the NBA will give to the Cavs because they don't want a sweep. And this will be the only game I expect the refs to jump in on...

just like players and coaches have to go to the podium after a game and answer questions from the media, I think the refs should have to do the same as well...let them explain themselves after the game
