My mother lives in Spring (about 30 minutes north of downtown Houston), and has an old, broken refrigerator in the garage. I used to see classified ads where people would pick up old refrigerators for free, then fix them up and sell them, but I don't see those ads anymore. What's the cheapest/easiest way to get rid of one?

Assuming you can get it to the curb, Heavy Trash Day?

Remeber, most trash pickup services won't take them now unless the freon has been legally removed from them.

Legally meaning you are supposed to have it done with a freon vaccuum, not simply busting the line and letting it escape.

Aww crap, now I have to find someone to "vacuum" the freon, too, in addition to hauling away the fridge?

Of course, if no one "sees" the freon line getting broken, who's to say it wasn't already broken when you got the fridge?

(Attn, all environmentalists: I don't advocate the release of freon to the atmosphere. I simply stating issues that Mack must consider.)

also, if you do set it to the curb...you should probably take the door off the hinges so that kids wont get trapped in it.

isn't there some sort of law or something like that about this?

Post a message for a free refrigerator on the houston.forsale newsgroup. Someone will take it off your hands.

    Step one
    Find dark street

    Step two
    Load fridge in truck

    Step three
    Drive to said street

    Step four
    Lower tailgate

    Step five
    Reverse very fast

    Step six
    Break hard

    Step seven
    Drive away very fast

    Glad I could help :)

See if any High Schools want it for their students to work on in shop class.

As an addendum to Htownhero's post...simply drop it off on the side of empty highway late at night.

I just hauled mine off to the transfer station...they busted, err legally disconnected, the freon line for me.

(And no, like Behad I don't advocate sending freon into the atmosphere either, but I didn't have much of a choice at the time)

I would suggest using holistic methods. ;)
