Simple question I was thinking about today.

What was the protection rule around the 1st round pick we sent to NJ for TWill. I know it was lottery protected, that's why we retained it last year. But does the protection have a expiring date like the Dallas pick we have?

1st round pick to Atlanta via Brooklyn is top 14 protected until 2016. If pick lasts to 2017, Houston will owe Atlanta (via Brooklyn) 2nd rounder and cash.

I believe it turns into two second rounders after the 2016 draft.

Thnx guys, didn't know it was traded to Atlanta

I guess it's good it turns into 2 second rounders instead of being completely unprotected

You could be right: 2016 2nd rounder and 2017 2nd rounder if 2016 1st rounder not conveyed. I thought there were also cash considerations.

I have lost track of our first and second rounders for the 2013 and 2014 drafts. At this point what do we have, including stipulations?

If the first round pick is not conveyed by 2016, it becomes a 2017 second rounder and $200k cash.

That's almost certainly why we insisted on locking the Toronto pick into the lottery. Since the restrictions are mutually exclusive with the Atlanta obligation, we could trade it along with one of our picks without running afoul of the Ted Stepien rule.

Incorrect. The Rockets could STILL only convey the "Undesirable Future Pick" of its own (being the pick two years after Houston fulfills its obligation to Atlanta via Brooklyn from the Terrence Williams trade). The Toronto pick is not guaranteed to be CONVEYED in a particular year. It's just protected so that it will most likely end up being a lottery pick.

I do not expect any of Houston's own future first round picks to be part of a Dwight Howard trade package. Between the TOR pick, the DAL pick and the CHA second rounder, there are plenty of good picks to include in a package without further complicating the Rockets' own future picks.
