Sure - you won't be upgrading 1 extra offensive lineman. But you'll be getting a HOF QB that just had one of the best seasons of his career. Are you better with a first-round pick lineman (which comes with plenty of risks too) and Savage/Rookie QB, or an elite QB and one less lineman?

I'm not arguing to do this, but the Texans would better the next 2 years even if they traded ALL their draft picks this year for Drew Brees than if they didn't. It would hurt them longer-term, of course, so it's not a good idea. But, like the Peyton Manning opportunity several years back, if you can get Drew Brees, you do what you have to do get him, and you sort out the rest later.

When it only costs money you can say that. When it costs picks you can't.

Romo retires after 2 years, you've won nothing and now your team is in disarray because you didn't restock because you traded away a bunch of draft picks.

Where is Romo coming into this? But beyond that, sure - that's the risk you take. The flipside is that you keep your picks, you are even less likely to win anything with Savage in the next 2 years, and then Hopkins/Clowney/Watt leave, decline or get paid a fortune, and you've replenished a bunch of players, but still have no QB and all the core of what made your team good a few years ago is no longer relevant.

Watt's contract is pretty easy to get out of in the near future if they need to. They save 9 million dollars if they cut him next offseason and 13 million if they cut him the year after that.

I doubt the Patriots fall off of a cliff as long as they have Belichick.

Patriots just traded a 1st and 3rd round pick for Brandon Cooks. In theory, that makes Brees more available if they are looking to rebuild. But it's probably would cost more than a 2nd or 3rd round pick.

Wow...Thought I wouldn't see him leave NO...but this really does open the door...perhaps Brees may be moved...Or maybe someone might have offered some pick package for Brees, making it far more likely to part with Cooks. Looks like they may just start to rebuild this year...And perhaps Houston could be that mystery team. The Texans do run a really quiet ship...getting Brees would be a heck of a move for the franchise.

He's older than Romo though and maybe have 2 seasons left.

He has won it all...Superbowl champ at the position that matters...matters...He just needs to protect the ball with this offensve. I would trade for Brees...Go all in when you can do so.

The Saints wanted extra picks to help rebuild their awful defense in what is one of the deepest defensive drafts in years (This gives them picks 11 and 32 along with their 2nd and now two 3rd rounders). All they have on that side of the ball for the most part is Cam Jordan. Rankins, their 1st round DT from last year, has major potential as well. But the cupboard is pretty bare after that. Furthermore, Michael Thomas, their 2nd round WR from last year, has already emerged as their top wideout. He had an excellent rookie year. Not to mention that they have Willie Snead who has turned into a good player and they signed Ted Ginn Jr. to be a vertical threat. Plus Cooks was complaining about touches late last season and seems to have an icy relationship with Thomas. All of this compelled them to move Cooks for picks. Brees isn't going anywhere. No doubt in my mind that he retires a Saint.

Because a couple of idiots suggested we trade Watt for Romo (LOL WTF?) at the end of the year and it has put Watt into every rumor now.

Saints seem to be content being mediocre(7-9/8-8) for his final 2-3 years. And when he leaves/retires, bottom out then.

Drew Brees signed a one year contract extension worth $24.25 million, all of which is guaranteed, on September 7, 2016 with the Saints. Brees, who had been scheduled to earn $20 million in 2016 will now earn $31.25 million, including a $30 million signing bonus per Andrew Brandt. The contract contains three voidable contract years to prorate the signing bonus. The new contract reduces Brees cap number from $30 million to $17.25 million in 2016. Brees has a no trade clause and can not be franchise tagged when his contract voids. If the contract voids and Brees is not extended the Saints will carry a dead money charge of $18 million in 2019 for Brees. The deadline for the void is the final day of the 2017 league year.

The Patriots traded the #32 pick and a swap of their end-3rd for the Saints high-4th.
