So I tried to play Dexter season 4 on my ps3 but it wouldn’t play or anything so after many tries I finally decide to connect the ps3 to the internet and the disc finally work. Is this common or is my PS3 messing up on me?

Did you try disconnecting it again and seeing if it worked? It shouldn't need to be connected to the internet to play, but you may have downloaded a PS3 update that allowed the disc to work.

This is not common. It may have been a dust particle or something malfunctioning at the first try (when it didn't work). It has happened only a couple of times while attempting to play my Blu-rays, but... I have a FAT original backwards-compatible one.

Is the problem you experienced with Blu-ray only with that disc?

Yes, only season 4 I popped in season two and that worked on the first try, this has happen before and I just hooked up the internet to the ps3 and it started working. Come to think of it I had to update the ps3 last night. Maybe it has something to do with that.
