I was looking at the sports VU stats, and Dwight is top 6 in the NBA on PTS scored per half court touch. He doesn't look smooth on the offensive end but when he does touch the ball he seems to score at a pretty good rate. I filtered out the guys who average less than 25 minutes. <table> <tr ><th>Player</th><th>GP</th><th>MIN per game</th><th>Touches per game</th><th>Total Touches</th><th>Front Court Touches per game</th><th>Time of Possession (min)</th><th>Close Touches per game</th><th>Elbow Touches per game</th><th>PTS per game</th><th>PTS Per Touch</th><th>PTS Per Half Court Touch</th></tr> <tr><td>Brook Lopez (BKN)</td><td>6</td><td>30.3</td><td>36.7</td><td>220</td><td>20.3</td><td>0.8</td><td>5.8</td><td>1.0</td><td>20.2</td><td>0.55</td><td>0.99</td></tr> <tr><td>Andre Drummond (DET)</td><td>5</td><td>34.3</td><td>32.2</td><td>161</td><td>12.4</td><td>0.7</td><td>4.6</td><td>1.2</td><td>9.8</td><td>0.30</td><td>0.79</td></tr> <tr><td>Carlos Boozer (CHI)</td><td>5</td><td>30.3</td><td>46.0</td><td>230</td><td>24.2</td><td>1.1</td><td>5.4</td><td>6.4</td><td>18.2</td><td>0.40</td><td>0.75</td></tr> <tr><td>Anthony Davis (NOP)</td><td>6</td><td>38.0</td><td>55.5</td><td>333</td><td>31.8</td><td>1.4</td><td>4.2</td><td>6.8</td><td>23.0</td><td>0.41</td><td>0.72</td></tr> <tr><td>Klay Thompson (GSW)</td><td>7</td><td>35.2</td><td>35.4</td><td>248</td><td>29.0</td><td>1.2</td><td>1.0</td><td>3.3</td><td>20.4</td><td>0.58</td><td>0.70</td></tr> <tr><td>Dwight Howard (HOU)</td><td>7</td><td>35.0</td><td>60.3</td><td>422</td><td>25.1</td><td>1.4</td><td>6.9</td><td>3.1</td><td>17.6</td><td>0.29</td><td>0.70</td></tr></table>
I heard somewhere he has had 50 plus touches this year and only has 38 Pts off them (inside the nba). That's bad! But I do believe that the rockets need to get him in a rhythm for them to have any success.
D12 and Griffin are being hated on for the post moves but from what I saw in the LAC game, Griffin had some good post moves on D12. Prettttttttttttty sad.
How many of those buckets are assisted on as opposed to him creating offense? We know we need to get Howard the ball more in scoring situations through penetration without having to look at data.
SportsVu is a good basis for assessing Dwight's points per touch, but a significant chunk of those as noted above are due to passes to dunks/lobs. I thought it might be useful to also look at Synergy's data in terms of points per possession on Post Up play. Brook Lopez - 1.19 PPP (#1) Andre Drummond - 0.50 PPP (unranked) Carlos Boozer - 1.0 PPP (unranked) Anthony Davis - 0.48 PPP (unranked) Klay Thompson - 1.37 PPP (unranked) Dwight Howard - 0.60 PPP (24th) Blake Griffin - 1.12 PPP (2nd) Tim Duncan - 1.08 PPP (unranked) Pau Gasol - 0.60 PPP (unranked) Marc Gasol - 0.89 PPP (9th) Zach Randolph - 0.98 PPP (6th) This is just a sample of folks from this year (small sample size). It pretty much confirms what most of us have said, that Dwight's post up game is okay, but nothing special. He's going to need a lot more time and reps with McHale and Dream.
I've been genuinely surprised how little he's been utilized as a drive and dish option down low for the guards. Seems underutilized in that aspect, though Harden has been hitting him on the pick and roll a little more often lately.
He doesn't have a post game/move. Hes under average. His defense is where he shines, hes crazy athletic and can pull down rebounds where others can't.
