On Wednesday evening (~5PM central), Sony will have an event where it is highly likely (probably 99%) that they will reveal the PlayStation 4. Some details have already leaked, which you can read about in the next-gen rumor thread (see latest pages for most recent information): http://bbs.clutchfans.net/showthread.php?t=232394 This includes info on its approximate specs, a prototype controller leak (pics + info), and more (also has info for the new Xbox too, codenamed Durango). Creating this thread so people can stay up-to-date on all the latest info. A bit early, but we've had more leaks recently, and a little hype prior to the event won't hurt. On top of that, Sony is apparently having a Vita event in a few hours, so if anyone cares about that (doubtful given Vita sales), I don't mind discussing that here as well (possibly will be some Vita-PS4 interactivity anyway). Sony is hyping up the event by putting together short retrospective videos on previous PlayStations. Maybe worth a look, especially for the nostalgia: Spoiler <iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/U7w5i_YCFmQ" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> <iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/Hvcps5dFzfc" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> <div style="width:616px;height:348px;"><object classid="clsid27CDB6E-AE6D-11cf-96B8-444553540000" width="100%" height="100%" id="psPlayer"><param name="movie" value=http://webassets.scea.com/pscomauth/groups/public/documents/webasset/ps-youtube-player.swf?v=-XF2pu-4rXc&embedding=0&autoplay=0&sharing=1&fullscreen=1 /><param name="allowfullscreen" value="true" /><param name="scale" value="noscale" /><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always" /><object type="application/x-shockwave-flash" data=http://webassets.scea.com/pscomauth/groups/public/documents/webasset/ps-youtube-player.swf?v=-XF2pu-4rXc&embedding=0&autoplay=0&sharing=1&fullscreen=1 width="100%" height="100%"> <param name="scale" value="noscale" /><param name="allowfullscreen" value="true" /><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always" /><a href="http://www.adobe.com/go/getflashplayer"><img src="http://www.adobe.com/images/shared/download_buttons/get_flash_player.gif" alt="Get Adobe Flash player" /></a></object></object></div> Let's remember the PS3's reveal (just posting the 1st parts of the 2005 and 2006 conferences, check out related/next videos for the full ones): Spoiler <iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/EbZ6QgEdWdw" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> <iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/85cEkzRcjUQ" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> This is what brought us "Attack its weak point for massive damage!" and "RIIIIIIIIIIIIIDDGGGGGGE RACCEEEEEEEEEERR!" What will PS4 bring? Gametrailers put it into overdrive and has put out a lot of PS4 content: http://www.gametrailers.com/videos/ktvw9o/playstation-4-20-games-we-want-revealed-for-ps4 http://www.gametrailers.com/videos/ddu1x7/playstation-4-20-games-we-want-revealed-for-ps4--part-2 http://www.gametrailers.com/videos/v202xq/playstation-4-playstation-meeting-dos-and-don-ts (kind of funny) Probably some more, but those are what I bothered to watch. As for what to expect, here are some early demos/videos from games that are expected to represent what the PS4 (and next Xbox) are capable of doing graphically: Spoiler <iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/UVX0OUO9ptU" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> <iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/xGC3BwktjXs" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> <iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/xU7WGAJPRRw" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> <iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/BQyGu4EqZsU" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> Note that some/all of these videos were captured on PC systems with VERY high-end specs (i7, GTX 680, etc.). The specs in the PS4 will not quite match these raw specs. Developers can better optimize their engines/visuals for the PS4, plus maybe reduce the quality somewhat (e.g., target 720p and 30fps instead of 1080p 60fps), but I'm not sure the final console versions will look exactly like those demos. But it should be a good representation. And who knows...maybe I'm wrong, and it blows those demos away (at high resolution and framerates too). Never doubt Naughty Dog is what I always say. Finally, the Internet being the Internet, many fans have spent the time creating animated GIFs of Kaz Hirai (Sony's current CEO, and former PlayStation head): http://kotaku.com/5982394/the-ps4-hype-train-destroys-the-internet-with-animated-gifs http://woodenlung.minus.com/mbe5GH4TPWCxXB
Some leaks/info from higher profile publications: http://www.thetimes.co.uk/tto/business/industries/technology/article3691304.ece FWIW, this would probably be converted to ~$400 in the US (not really "far cheaper than expected" IMO, but whatever). I think a similar article (from Nikkei?) suggested similar pricing. Doubt we'll get pricing at this event, so we'll have plenty of time to speculate. I think I posted similar articles back in 2006 suggesting a $350 price for PS3 now that I think about it though. http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424127887323764804578311993152891294.html (being WSJ, can be difficult to read this, but there's ways around this) BTW, as for the Vita stuff last night, there wasn't really much. A price drop in Japan (~$200 for both versions). No new games shown, though I think some new stuff from announced games were announced.
All I care about is how much it will be initially because momma ain't droppin 600 for it to drop down to 300 in two years again.
PS3 was FIVE HUNDRED AND NINETY NINE US DOLLARS <iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/BOHqG1nc_tw" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> (also a cheaper SKU for $499) Might have paid ~$700 with tax + shipping and/or off of eBay.

It'll be a tough decision which console to go with for me this time around with some of these rumors for the PS4.
I sold my PS3 launch console and an extra controller for $2200 on eBay. I camped out for two nights while I was in college. Not sure if I would do it again, though. It's hard to get excited for a new console because the launch games are usually not that great.
More PR hype: <iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/X_W1JQ5ubWQ" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> Didn't expect all their consoles to be shown already (figured PSP and Vita would be separate). Since these were being released daily, not sure what they might show tomorrow. Possibly PS4 teaser, but probably shouldn't get hopes up.
I camped for mine too. 24hrs in a line hungover in Richmond, Texas. Slept on it then decided not to sell it and played Resistance. Great memories. Later sold that unit to cwebbster.
Final video in PR video hype series: <iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/AKi7qlDdXxs" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> Just stupid games, no PS4 teaser. Kotaku is wanting some clicks, so here's another article from them: http://kotaku.com/5985356/source-th...d-youll-be-able-to-control-it-with-your-phone Photos of the controller images are at the link. They're different angles that what's been seen before, but not a lot to really look at. Some of this I believe, but some of it I'm skeptical about. While the pricing might happen, it sounds like a strange number. And it converts nicely into ~40K yen. It is almost like they knew Sony was targeting 40K yen, then directly converted that to dollars. I'd guess $400/$500 SKUs rather than $429/$529. But who knows? Also, if they're going to start charging for online features, it better be for PlayStation Plus-type features. BTW, the codenames that Kotaku claims came from this source? I'm pretty sure they were on the Internet before Kotaku ever posted anything. So not really gaining any credibility with that statement (though they clearly have some source with access to PS4 controller prototypes).
I'll catch the event later today on the internet. I'm probably going to buy the Xbox 720 over the PS4, since I really like my Xbox 360, but we'll see. I haven't been impressed with the direction that Microsoft wants to go. Seems that they're less about gaming nowadays and more about general media.
Not really anything. Some "what we currently know" and "what Sony should do tonight" articles popping up, but nothing really worth getting excited about. Saw a few more rumors pop up (e.g., online play/"PS3 features" still free, but new PS4 features and PS+ would cost $80-$90 a year), but not from trustworthy sources IMO. Might get a sneak peek at BF4 tonight (for next-gen of course), but not 100% on that. Some people have been getting excited about seeing who is in NYC and going to the event (i.e., certain developers), but that's not necessarily something to be excited about. While these people may be there to show off a new game/demo/etc., they may also just be in attendance because this is the PS4. 1200ish people will be there, but they won't all be involved in the presentation. About 6 hours out, so probably best to just wait. PR might leak a little ahead of that, but still around then is when I'd expect most details.
https://us.playstation.com/meeting2013/ 6PM EST. There will be multiple livestreams when the event is ready. Likely one on the URL above, Sony will likely stream to PS3s, Twitch/GameTrailer/etc. will probably have streams, etc. I'll probably post some later as they get started (assuming no one else does). Shouldn't be hard to find one. edit: This assumes the Rockets don't make a crazy trade later today, and we end up killing the server of course. In that case, good luck finding streams.
