Just want to see which players on our current team you guys think are suitable for the 3 point heavy offense, who had proven they could before coming here and outside of threes can hit their FTs and lay-ups consistently. Also the stretch big man / 4 is part of this, so which players on our roster fit that to a T? Honestly, outside of Beverley & D-Mo who both grew into (better) 3pt shooters, Ariza, Thornton and Harden (obviously), I don't see our players fitting that philosophy. TJ is not a good 3pt shooter nor finisher of FTs and lay-ups, Capela will never be a stretch big man, Harrell, Josh, Brewer is a horrible finisher and 3pt shooter (even when he hits it's like a miracle), Ty is not the greatest shooter, KJ, Terry is too old to finish anything outside of the occasional 3 pointer and close rang 2 but he's here for other reasons, Dwight obviously not but that's okay and Dekker was never that great in college but the jury is still out on him. Of course, you cannot have a perfect roster, but it seems that Morey was great in the early years of Adelman to get those role players and this time around it has seemed more problematic. He has still not drafted according to his philosophy, less actually than before, has gotten lucky with some players through trades and also seems rather just to go with who happens to be available instead of working hard to get the right players. What you guys think? Maybe I have a wrong impression of the philosophy so I'm gladly proven wrong on this. Please share what you know, because it seems a lot of people think Morey has not gotten the right players for this 'system' and according to my view, that is true, but maybe I am wrong and people who feel the same way can get a good view on this.
Most fit. It's just not practical how we get our shots. That's what needs to be changed We have too many contested 3s, and bogged down possessions.
Obviously, we don't have great 3 point shooters here. Not even one. There's like 10 of them in the NBA, 0 in Houston. We had DHo and DMo, but we were going to Brewers for 3. We should have gone more to post, since we didn't have good outside shooters. What could have been. R.I.P. Moreyball.
They're top 5 in scoring, 2nd in 3PM, offense isn't the problem. Morey hired Rick Adelman. Initially planned to extend JVG. IMO, he's not confined to a particular system. He's simply committed to finding good players.
Those are volume stats not efficiency stats. They have a relative high volume of made shots but at the same time have a high volume of missed shots including three point shots(lead the league in that department) which generate long rebounds and opportunities for fast breaks for the opponent. Compound that with their high rate of turnovers which also lead to easy buckets for the opponents, the Rocket's 'high scoring offense' also generates a lot of points for the opponent. Offense is part of the problem.
They shoot a better 3% this year than they did last. They turn the ball over less this year than they did last year (per game). They had a good defense last year. Bad defense this year......
They are still near the bottom of the league in 3pters missed and turnovers per game. Maybe those glaring deficiencies have caught up with them? Being top 5 in scoring doesn't mean a team is a good offensive team. It can also mean they just take a lot of attempts. If offense isn't a problem, does that mean you are content with this team being 28th in turnovers? What, turnovers aren't a problem anymore?
Harden missed more shots this season than any other Rocket has taken. He shoots 42%. If Harden was a team, he'd shoot worse than 29 NBA teams. And he shoots more than any other Rocket. Only 2 guys shoot more in the NBA than Harden. Dude's shooting 42%, shoots 3rds most in NBA, is pathetic on defense, why do you like him THAT much? Just because sometimes he'll go for 50 and won't turn the ball over 10 times?
Repped. Posted an article with comprehensive and in depth analysis on the subject on another thread. Our offence with the type of shots we are taking is horrendous. It should have been much much better.
Spoiler Anthony Morrow Ryan Anderson Jeff Teague Kyle Korver Douggy McBuckets Tony Snell Meyers Leonard Serge Ibaka Mike Conley Kyle Lowry Lou Williams maybe Jae Crowder Kelly Olynyk (I really want him here) Porzingoat Tobias Harris Evan Fournier Damian Lillard Kyrie Irving Nick Batum Kevin Durant Lamarcus Aldridge Anthony Davis Rodney Hood Will Barton as of late Randy Foye Orange Juice Mayonnaise Reggie Jackson can shoot now. Joe Johnson anybody on the warriors really. Patty Mills Ersan Illyasova Boban Marjonavich would be awesome Al Horford Paul Millsap Kent Bazemore Thabo Sefolosha Avery Bradley J Sully Bobby Portis Jordan Hill Goran Dragic Courtney Lee Khris Middleton Channing Frye Demarre Carroll Jared Dudley Wilson Chandler JJ Redick Nmenjasargaergaerg Bjelica KAT Eric Gordon CJ Mccollum Allen Crabbe PJ Tucker Markieff Morris Demarcus Cousins Darren Collison Ben Mclemore Kawhi Leonard Danny Green David West Garrett Temple all of these players would be good additions; obviously some less attainable than others
Why does everyone just focus on "offensive philosophy"? Morey is looking for players that fit on both sides. There's a reason why a lot of our players can play/guard multiple positions and have length and athleticism. It's not all about being able to hit 3 pts at 40% and being good in the piant.
First, i think the Rockets don't require their Centers to stretch the floor or shoot FT's well. They're looking for defense, rebounding and finishing at the rim. Chuck Hayes, Dalembert, Asik, Howard, and Capela all fit at least 1 of those 3. But i agree with the idea that the coaches usually have a big say i philosophy with regards to "what skills should our players have?" Looking at his moves, we could guess that Morey likes guys who can shoot the 3, are on good contracts, and have high potential (think of all the former top 10 draft picks we've traded for). Only 1 of those is an actual basketball skill.
