Bob Sansevere's column: Pippen pays, sort of

So far, Scottie Pippen's visit to the Twin Cities hasn't gone the
way he had hoped. He's 0 for 2. Over the weekend, he lost both a
game and an attempt to skip out on a $750 bill at a local
    restaurant.

Things began to veer for the Portland Trail Blazers' star forward
Saturday night. Pippen wanted to watch the heavyweight
championship bout between Lennox Lewis and Michael Grant. So
he had one of his people call Champps restaurant in downtown
Minneapolis to see if they'd show the fight for him.

Athletes never make this kind of call themselves. That's why they
have people. Anyway, Champps agreed to let Pippen and about a
dozen of his people watch the fight in a private room as long as he
would reimburse the restaurant the $750 it cost to get the bout
from DirecTV. (Champps had no plans to show the fight and
wouldn't have ordered it if Pippen hadn't made the request.)

The fight lasted less than two rounds. Lewis pummeled Grant. Not
long afterward, Pippen informed his server he didn't want to pay
    the $750.

Champps general manager Ken Wilson declined to comment, but
a source said Pippen didn't want to pay the full amount because
the fight was over so fast.

Pippen gave ``the impression he didn't want to pay anything,'' the
    source said.

Finally, Pippen agreed to pay Champps $375, half the cost of the
pay-per-view event. To his credit, he paid his bar tab without
    complaint.

When asked for his version of Pay-Half-Per-View, Pippen
    became agitated.

    ``That was a private deal I worked out,'' he said. ``That shouldn't
    even be public knowledge.''

Pippen, by the way, is making $14.8 million this year from the
Trail Blazers. In other words, $750 is, as Ralph Kramden used to
say, a mere bag of shells. It's .00507 percent of Pippen's salary. It'd
be similar to someone making $25,000 a year refusing to pay a
$1.27 bill. Which is almost a dollar less than the cost of a Big Mac
    sandwich at McDonald's.

Pippen is paid good money, darn good money, to produce in the
clutch for the Blazers, something he did in the first two games of
this best-of-five NBA playoff series against the Timberwolves. He
failed to do it Sunday, though.

What I don't like is that he agreed to $750 for the service and then tried to negotiate downward after the fact. That's scummy. If you make an agreement you stick to it. It's not the owners fault the fight went two rounds. But I can't agree with you that 750$ has less value to Pippen than it does to me. $750 is a lot of money no matter who you are. There's no telling what the seven hundred and fifty dollars might do for someone like him (investments or what have you). So when you think about it that money may actually have more value to Pippen than it does to me because he may have more resources to exploit it. Like a good investment manager. Or for example, he could buy sixty basketballs, sign them all, and turn a profit on that $750 that I couldn't do. Just a thought.

Does anybody recall seeing any Pip TV commercials recently?

I could be imagining, but it seems he isn't on that much, if at all.

Sorry PJS, can't agree with your logic that 750 could mean as much or more to him than an average salaried person because of his market advantages. While he could turn that 750 into a nice profit, he still has approximately 19,999 of such $750 wads of cash leftover from this years salary if he is THAT intertested in the scheme you mentioned. This is an aweful lot of basketballs to sign if he even wants to use say 1/100 of his salary to generate more money this way (using your figures he would have to sign about 15,000 basketballs). He could easily break a nail trying to sign 15,000 basketballs for his profit scheme, and we all know what that would do to him [IMG]

In short, in fulfilling his agreement, I don't think he would have missed 1 out of 20,000 $750 wads of cash that much. Of course I am neglecting taxes, which take a big bite--though lessoned for such superstars because of their wiz tax lawyers and accountants. So money wasn't the issue here it was clearly principle, I am not sure what principle Snottie thought he was sticking to but the only one I can come up with is the 'I am an *hole" principle.

This is the same man who settled two different paternity suits. The fact that he had to be sued to provide financial support for the children he fathered speaks volumes about the man's character. He's turned skipping out into an art form-- kids, teams, restaurant tabs, they're all the same to Pippen.

I'm sure a lot of people were disappointed in paying money for this pay-per-view event. They still got the bill -- as did Champs. The fact that it was a private party, arranged at his request -- it's just sad.

**** that guy!! Who the hell does he think he is?!! Man, I swear if I EVER see that guy I AM going to let his sorry, lame ass excuse for a human being, know how I really feel about him, whether his big, ugly grill likes it or not!!

Why did the manager let Pippen get away with that? Why did they cater to that ****ing loser?!! They could have called the police!

Im a waiter, and I had heard (not just from here ) that pippen doesnt tip. I think that is disgraceful, considering waiters are paid 2.13 an hour.
The guy flat out has no class. Im so glad he is not with the rockets, i hesistate to say this, but i would rather have dennis rodman on the rockets then him.
