@pgammo: Astros started 17-34, Brad Mills overhauled, 50-39 since June 1. He has to be NL Mgr. of the Year
I think .500 is the key # if he wants to be seriously considered. Even then it may not happen, but he would definitely get some votes.
Not gonna happen unless we at least finish .500 or better, just started off way to slow. Probably going to go to Dusty Baker or Bobby Cox.
Since June 1st - Stros 50 - 39 Reds 49 - 40 Braves were expected to contend for the Divison and WC, tons picked the Stros last. I know the season starts in April not June but he is starting to get some run among the media for the work he has done.
I like Mills, I hope he sticks around for awhile. I doubt he will get the award, but it would be cool.
Bobby Cox could get the sentimental vote seeing as its his final year. What about Bud Black of the Padres? There is a team a lot of people didn't see coming. Bruce Bochy is a candidate as well.
What about Buddy Black, the Padres manager?? They were supposed to do nothing this year. Right now they are in the thick of the playoff race. If they hold on, I see no reason why he should not get it. Manager of the Year is such a subjective award, but I tend to view it as the MVP award. The biggest thing to do is to get your team to the playoffs, or at least put them on the precipice of getting there; especially if your team was not expected to be anywhere in the discussion.
The big thing is surpassing expectations. Its hard to win if your a good manager with a good team. Jerry Sloan never wins because the Jazz are always good, but they wouldn't be as good without him even if he is an azzhat. You have to get a winning record though.
Mills manager of the yr? Damn Gammons must have been a little tipsy when he said that. Its a 3 man race: Baker/B.C./Baker.
Manager of the year for a team under .500, child please. He shouldn't even be in the top 5. If Padres win the NL West, it goes to Bud Black in my opinion. If they don't, it goes to Dusty Baker. Top 5 mangers in the NL this year are Black, Baker, Bobby Cox, Bruce Bochy, and Charlie Manuel.
I agree with your list. I might put Jim Tracy ahead of Manuel because everyone knew the Phillies would win 90+ games again.
True but the Phillies have a had a bunch of injuries to key guys like Chase Utley, Ryan Howard, Jimmy Rollins, Brad Lidge, and Placido Polanco. They all missed extended time with injuries. Utley, Rollins, and Polanco missed over 40 games.
