I don't know what ESPN is up to with all this positive Rocket talk but I have a funny feeling about it...

With all the player movement there should be more parity this year, but some of these totals seem ridiculously low.

Who will win the NBA title?

Heading into 2018-19, the Golden State Warriors received every first-place vote in this category. Now there's more competition, with the LA Clippers leading the way as the most likely NBA champion.

    1. LA Clippers: 117 points (54.5% first-place votes)
    2. Milwaukee Bucks: 85 points (36.4% first-place votes)
    3. Philadelphia 76ers: 38 points (6.1% first-place votes)
    4. Los Angeles Lakers: 29 points
    5. Golden State Warriors: 15 points (3.0% first-place votes)
    6. Houston Rockets: 11 points
    7. Utah Jazz: 3 points

Voters were asked for their top three most likely title teams, and we calculated a weighted point total.

    5. Which West team is most overrated?

Marc J. Spears: The Houston Rockets at 53 wins, behind just four other teams in the league.

Looks like Pelton is grading on a curve, just going with a Vegas-like over/under numbers. There will be a team with 60 wins, but that team can't be projected with any accuracy. Health is the greatest unknown.

I see ESPN is doing their *Summer Forecast* stuff now. When they *Forecast* the MVP award....that will set the table for the *Narrative.*

Expect to see Giannis (aesthetics), Anthony Davis (LA media market) and Curry (high usage) to lead the parade. And the Bucks have an EASY Eastern Conference to pile up wins.

FWIW, humans are stupid, and notoriously bad at these things. I would tend to trust the models more.

I do think the winner in the West will have more than 53 wins, though. When was it ever that low?

    Bold Prediction:

Warriors miss playoffs due to Curry and Green missing substantial time. Lack of depth hampers Warriors and their season ended before it began. Have we seen the best of the Warriors? Time will tell.

    My best ESPN prediction imitation.

ESPN copies my ranking. The difference is that ESPN does not believe any West team is able to win 55 games.

    My ranking:
    Nuggets 65 wins
    Clippers 63 wins
    Rockets 55 wins
    Jazz 50 wins
    GS 48
    Lakers 46
    Blazers 45
    Spurs 45

All my co-workers believe that Rockets have bad coaching and bad bench come playoffs time.

MDA identifies 9 unplayable man come playoffs time.

I always wondered why ESPN repped so hard for OKC, a mediocre franchise in a small market, and hated the Rockets... now I'm thinking it's the Russell Westbrook effect.

Nah, Houston is a good foil. Easier to build up and tear down rather than dismiss early then eat crow later
