Beverley spoke yesterday at Media Day about losing weight this offseason (see interview), but it was another thing entirely to see him out on the court today. His weight loss is evident... looks very lean and more like the Pat we saw when he first came on board with the Rockets.

He said he did it going low carb, eating his carbs in the morning primarily. He's hoping to lose a few more pounds -- he's at 198 right now and hopes to get to 192. He also said he could tell the extra weight has hurt him in the past.

Here are a couple pictures I took that show that.

Is it a common thing for guards to slim down? I don't recall cases prior to Lowry (2years ago?) who made drastic changes to his weight during summer. Also didn't see anyone complain during last season about Bev's weight.

Has anyone ever had a great year after slimming down? I know Bron did, Duncan did it, Melo....but did it help?

Lebron did prior to last year. Low carb thing too. It's common for athletes to bulk up and then realize later that it slows their movement and is more of a hindrance than help. Especially in a non-contact sport like basketball.

Good. It's not like he was allowed to use his strength anyway while on the perimeter.

I remember him saying he was going to add weight last summer (or was it two years ago?) though, maybe that didn't turn out as a good decision, non sure if this may be related somehow to his knee injuries but...

Here's hoping. That version of Bev could do a ton for this current squad

I think he's limiting his carbs, rather than completely eliminating them. Much different than Atkins!

Looks very fit and healthy compared to some of the other pros that have made a large trim down over the past few years (Melo comes to mind). All of them seemed to gain the weight back pretty quickly as well.

Cutting carbs actually works lost like 10-15pounds in last few months doing so.

He could probably get to 192 if he cut some of the hair. Its getting wild lol

But seriously, good on him! Every since that knee injury at the end of 2014, Bev has not been the defender he was earlier that season. He was almost a 1st team All-Defense that season (I think Iggy took his spot since he was qualified for either G/F position). But losing weight is certainly going to be better for that knee and any similar other injury he has had since then.

Lord knows we are going to need him absolutely flying on defense for us to be at least respectable on that end this year.

If Bev can return to the defensive pest he once was it would do wonders for this team.

We did complain about his regression on defense and inability to stay in front of people like he used to. He wasn't "fat" by any measure, but now he looks like the young Pat we saw fresh out of Russia. Slick and quick as a cat, stealing the ball from Holiday 4 times in a row. His game is a game of a half a thou of a second. It seems funny him talking about marking a measly 3 pounds, but at that body fat percentage, that elite Olympic level of fitness, he is after that extra half thou of a second. The difference between denying an edge around him, the difference between a stolen ball and a reach foul.

I'm glad to see Clutch following up with a focus on Bev's weight. I felt it was 1 of the standouts of media day. Now what remains is Bev to prove his durability.

To answer DaDakota, Marc Gasol was the most significant and recent correlation between slimming down and improving their game. Gasol was a legitimate name in the MVP conversation that year. And he did it for durability. And he had one of his most durable seasons that 14-15 season. So here is to hoping that we see a durable Pat this year, that lightning quick Pat we saw when he hopped on a transatlantic red eye and woke up the league.

In the training camp shootout video, I thought he look bigger. Not heavier, but more muscular type bigger.
