Glad to see President Obama call out the Pakistani government on their implicit support of the Kalashnikov culture.

Cut the foreign aid to Pakistani military and force ISI to close down shop with terrorist. Pakistan is not a ally of the US with same strategic long-term goals.

Support India - at least that country is a lot more civilized - thanks to the UK.

I agree India is more allied with U.S. interests, but we cannot afford for Pakistan to turn openly hostile and become a lot more trouble than it is now.

It's delicate. I believe your overall sentiment is correct.

This is a very valid criticism of Pakistan. The Pakistani government and army need to crack down on terror cells and the people who support civil unrest. Additionally there's a very high corruption level in that country that needs to be addressed sternly.

A country like Pakistan needs a strong ruler to whip it into shape.

What does this even mean? "Thanks to the uk"

The entire Indian subcontinent is the same level of "uncivilized" albeit in different ways.

One huge distinction: Unlike Pakistan, India doesn't externally support and internally harbor Islamic terrorists.

Yes I agree Pakistan has a huge problem with that and it needs to be addressed because those same terrorists create a lot of issues domestically for the Pakistani people. Not sure why I need to repeat that for you.

That's of little relevance to DD's claim that India is "a lot more civilized"

See: rape and sanitation issues in India.

The entire area is "uncivilized" in the way that he claims.

DD's comments on anywhere that is not "westernized" are usually fairly low brow though.

Why didn't he make this kind of statement when Osama bin Laden was killed a mile down the road from the Pakistan Military Academy? It would have been more meaningful.

DD was responding to someone who said "Cut the foreign aid to Pakistani military...Pakistan is not a ally of the US with same strategic long-term goals."

His first two words were, "Support India". The remainder of what he said about civilized and the UK was off-the-subject blather.

It was all off the subject nonsense.

We support India as it is.

I'm sure Pakistan will then get in line and do everything we say.

The thing is, they can't. Maybe if Regan did this, but now it's too late. Hope I'm wrong.

Pakistan is the most dangerous country on earth IMO. The #1 chance for violent extremists to acquire WMD's and they know it.

Forget Reagan, US favoritism to Pakistan goes back to Richard Nixon during the Bangladesh War. 10 million refugees were sitting in India and the US still stood by Pakistan's side (because China).

These are meaningless statements until we see action actions. Starting with the billions in funding we provide them.

That said, Pakistan doesn't even need the US. They're protected by China + the Muslim World + WMDs. The US is just icing on the cake. US funding hasn't changed their policies, I don't want to know what putting our foot down will do.

...or he will use strong words against them! Possibly even a mean stare! He might even be forced to give another speech on the topic...although that would be a last resort.

Which is why cutting the aid is a problem. Ee can't cut it because it would just worsen conditions there, and make lots of bad things we wouldn't want to happen, happen.

Foreign policy, at least foreign policy actions, cannot be performed based on feel good soundbites. Things are generally a lot more complicated than we would like, and things that seem like the right thing to do...aren't. Foreign policy needs to be pragmatic...it is the outcomes that matter more than the actions taken to get them. Doing the 'right thing', if it leads to the wrong results, is not the right thing.

Right but you can focus on bringing Pakistan to the table. All of the time spent on Iran should have been spent on Pakistan. There are actual pro-peace established political parties in Pakistan who you can put in a position to succeed by giving actual (not figurative) aid in the form of education, medicine, food. To compare, there are no alternative political parties in Iran or in most of the middle east.

Obviously, JUST cutting the aid wouldn't help in the way that it would in Egypt. But there are steps that can be taken which are not being taken. That aid is essentially going to a few hands.

Being realistic for a second, no government but the US would actually use a nuke because no government wants to disappear from the face of the earth. The only possibility of that happening in Pakistan is if extremists get into higher and higher ranks, AND THAT'S HAPPENING. That's scary stuff and if you ask me, it's incredible how much time is spent on Iran and N Korea and previously Iraq and Afghanistan when Pakistani nukes are closer to the hands of violent extremists than anywhere else in the world.
