Yup, the rise of Socialism in the country is disgusting.

Liberals used to deny they were Socialists/Communists. At least they are now coming out of the closet.

When are conservatives going to admit that they are fascists?

    Because they are, you know.....

Nothing is more Fascist than the private insurance mandate that liberals rejoice about. But they really want even more - they want full on socialism. (even though they used to deny it like the evil, lying snakes that they are)

I get tired of being labeled a Socialist merely because I am a Democrat.

Obama got go **** himself, and use his mandates to clean up the mess.

It's not about Socialist, it's about LOBBYIST.

Lobbyist money passed this mandate, tax, or whatever else you want to call it.

I'm tired of seeing the democratic party being obviously hijacked by the elites. Time for Americans to start voting smarter, we can not allow ourselves to be duped by the uber rich.

I'm tired of being called a Democrat just because I'm a socialist. The Democrats look a lot like Republicans to me.

The problem with the chart are panels 4 and 5. Education, in and of itself, does NOT equal a better society in the long run.

We have to begin, of course, by asking what is education. The fact is that if you go to UT and take History, or you go to any school and take Women's Studies, frankly your education is a total waste of time and you would have been better off after high school finding a job. And the state paying for millions upon millions of kids to do that is a waste. Heck, had a Swedish friend of mine who honestly told upon graduation that she had no clue what she was going to do when she headed back.

Rather than give free access to kids who will likely waste it, it's a better to improve the universal education we already have. High school needs to be re-emphasized and streamlined, teachers' salaries should be raised, and so on. But frankly, university education for the sake of university education is not as good or as useful as people make it out to be.

I think you vastly underestimate the usefulness of a liberal arts degree. Sure,a BA in gender studies or history might be useless alone, but with the right postgraduate major you can do more than flip burgers.

Also, I belive Norwegian schools are fewer and way more selective- so it's top students getting free education, not John Blutarsky.

So what is stopping you from running into the wilderness somewhere and just living off the grid? Build your own house, forage for your own food, make your own clothes.

And leave the rest of us more civilized folk alone.

There are two scenarios that can unfold. Either America enacts enough social justice / equality policy that makes opportunity truly available to all, and thus strengthens the nation...

...or we continue on the route we are on, which concentrates wealth into a nobility class and we essentially become a fuedal nation. With corporations as the new barons, and people living on the scraps paying everything they have just to survive...unable to afford an education reserved for only the elite.

What you end up with is a collapse. Not an economic one, but a national one. And that isn't going to be pretty.

So really, it doesn't matter, seems you choose the latter. Seems Norway choose the former. It's all about choices afterall isn't it?

The thing about Socialism is that today's Americans who actually believe in it are afraid to own up to the term. Like the OP. The title of the thread is just begging for us to find a way to call it something different.

If you believe America should be socialist, own up to it, that's all I'm asking. It seems like everything is just a semantic game around here. Can't you all just be like Northside, who possibly rejects any positive role of capitalism in world history?

    Another thing:
    Capitalism != corporatism.

With that fact in mind, 90% of the rabid 'pseudo-socialism vs pseudo-capitalism' debates around here sort of fizzle out.

This cute little propaganda comic is actually about bloated corporations and bloated government. "Unleashing" for-profit schools and "owning" politicians. Maintaining a bloated prison system. Maintaining a bloated military and military presence.

Does the solution to any of that sound like we should turn to more government control? Flame me all you want. I just dislike RedR's attitude that there's only one side to any debate. Even a staunch capitalist libertarian should acknowledge that our country was founded to give everyone the ability to pursue education. It is somewhat more vague about whether anyone should be forced or spoon fed their way through life. IMO, it's how we approach this sticky distinction that affects almost every governmental decision. So why don't we spend more time discussing how to lower tuition costs instead of sitting here labeling each other and bickering over ideologies?

Education is only showing itself to be useless because of the way it is provided. Don't be fooled into thinking education is not-so-useful just because the current and undisputed structure of education-related institutions is messed up. Meanwhile, the people in charge will have you think they are disputing serious problems when in reality they are just toying with a subject matter in a curriculum.

I remember this quote I think it's from Ralph Nader, something like him asking his son "what did you learn in school today? did you learn how to believe, or did you learn how to think?"

I think that pretty much nails it. Schools are slowly but surely becoming manufacturing plants for obedient corporate slaves. Yes there are people fighting it, but the people supporting it are richer, more powerful, and have the support of the already-manufactured students.

Miracles are possible if your money is well-spent.

Not to mention that Sweden is arguably more prone to terrorism than the US, unless you count "attacks" against "overseas self-interests".

What does the Nader quote mean? What do you mean by think? Does the student who chooses to learn physics or engineering show himself off to be an inferior thinker to that person who chose to take women's studies? Is he a corporate slave for learning actual skills as opposed to erudite discussions over postmodernist racial power structures or some baloney like that?

I'm a liberal arts major myself. But I come from a school far better than UT, and I accept and acknowledge that my friends who took physics and economics both had far less trouble finding work and have better work. Fact is that if you want to learn that sort of stuff, you have no business going to a state school. Their resources SHOULD be devoted to the sciences and maths which are important, while other more specialized schools have the luxury of liberal arts. Education, at the end of the day, is about providing a better life for its people. The man who goes to trade school never learns how to think but he gains a skill which gives him a better life. Same with state schools.
