I know we have more glaring needs but IMHO, we need a new punter. Before December I would have said Sepulveda should be our target but the dude has torn his right ACL for the 3rd time in 7 years. He's damaged goods. 4th round...draft a punter.
http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.co...er-lambasts-the-raiders-for-firing-tom-cable/ Lechler could be a HUGE pickup for the Texans if he gets released. Sure, there are obviously bigger needs but he is the best punter in the game and at times a game changer.
I really doubt they cut Lechler, and if he wants out because he hates head coaching changes, I doubt he signs here where the coach is "allegedly" (snicker snicker) on thin ice.
He is from East Bernard, TX and went to Texas A&M. He could want to come home, and compared to the Raiders we actually look like a well-run organization.
He more or less blasted the organization in that article and Al Davis does stupid things even without being provoked. It's probably a long-shot that he gets cut but you never know.
I have to say I was shocked they canned Cable too. He actually had them competitive this year. After saying this, he may be begging for it:
If McNair is serious about results being needed next year he better open up his pocketbook big time..
Turk is 26th in average yards, 25th in punts inside 20, 20th in average net, is 42 years old... and Kubiak and his crew never even thought to bring in a challenger or even have it open to competition. All because Turk is such a nice guy, I'm sure.
Raiders signed another punter. http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2011/01/05/a-day-after-lechlers-rant-raiders-sign-a-new-punter/ Lechler in Houston almost happened once before, didn't it?
Lechler would do many good things for this team...a good punter can go a long way, specially when youre replacing someone like Turk. Wishful thinking, but if that opportunity comes up, its be a nice addition.
Come on, it's the freaking Raiders. Every time I get irritated with McNair, I just remember with immense gratitude that neither Adams nor Davis own this team.
In 2013, when the Texans still haven't made the playoffs, and Wade Phillips is the head coach, McNair will be equal to Davis/Jones/Adams in my book.
This is my fear. We will have wasted 6+ years (not even counting '06 and '07) at that point waiting for change in a league that has shown repeatedly that it can be done in 2-3 years.
It will certainly feel that frustrating, for sure. But come on, Davis? You're talking 25+ years of insanity.
