It happened almost exactly 20 years ago (May 6th, 1998) -- 21 seasons ago -- so there's a chance they didn't include 98 in the threshold.

Good call, and terrible game. Thank Goodness for Gutierez -- Pretty Ricky what they called him.

I wonder would they even let a rookie pitcher get that number of pitches again even if he's going that good...

This season we've seen a couple young pitchers with no-hitters going through ~6 innings get pulled from the game simply due to pitch count. That's got to be frustrating for the pitcher who knows he has a chance at something special.

Another game with high strikeout totals for the Stros. I did a rough comparison this yr verse last. 2017 at this point we had the third lowest strikeouts per 9. Currently we are 8 spots from most strikeouts per 9. That is my main concern at this point. Considering we haven’t even really seen big time strikeout pitchers thus far.

Yuli coming back will help some. Fisher/Davis/Marisnick combo aren't helping. Springer/Bregman with slow starts.

Most of the biggest strikeout pitchers in the AL actually play for the Astros.

His 14th strikeout actually came on 93 pitches (2nd batter of the 7th inning).

    Uncanny.

Having Fisher and Marisnick out of the lineup tonight should help keep the strikeouts down.

Altuve and Bregman are actually striking out less this year than last, and Marwin looks like he's getting off the K-Train.

Some people feel that Beltran helped give pointers in the dugout last year that kept the team K% low. I'm not sure if that's true, but if it is, I wonder if acquiring a veteran bat like Adrian Beltre at the trade deadline might produce a beneficial effect on the team strikeout rate. The Rangers would do well to get something prospect-wise for Beltre before he goes FA, and getting his salary off their books would help them financially too. In the meantime Beltre could replace Gattis at DH and in all likelihood Beltre would not strike out more than 12% of the time.

It's impressive he got 7 more outs on 29 pitches which included 6 strike outs.

Beltre as DH sounds too good. Though I hate the idea of giving prospects to the mall cops. Guess you gotta give some to get some though. Until something like that potentially happens I think DH is going to be a glaring hole for us. Not as worried about LF with tucker in the wings

I think if you are "vet" (maybe 4-5 years) they will let you go more but I agree one game is not worth the possible arm problems later.

When/how did Centeno end up on the Rangers?

i've read this so many times from players. The preparation necessary to be the guy coming in at that spot is enormous.

Look, I've been on Giles for a while. I think I'm pretty good at reading body language, and I could tell you what happened in the playoffs was going to happen way before it happened. I'm not part of the Dionne Warwick Psychic Friends Network (though I'd like to be!)...but I can see it in him. He's not cut out for that in those kinds of games. He might hit on them some...but mostly, he won't. And he knows it. That doesn't make him a terrible person or a loser or anything like that. He has tremendous talent. He's just not the guy for those spots in those games. I find that pretty easy to see (not sure how to explain that).

No Gurriel or Aoki really changes things. Both guys rarely strikeout and were replaced in the lineup by guys that do frequently (Jake/Fisher/Davis).

John Daniels only goes after 2 kinds of guys in FA:

    1) Former Astros position players
    2) Guys that were good several years earlier

Uncle Charles with 7 Ks through just 3 innings. The Ramgers sure do strike out a lot. They might be on pace for some kind of series record at this point.

Is Beltran still available as a hitting coach?
