I didn't label Big Ben a reach because, IIRC, people expected him to go in the 1st round. And FWIW, Ryan was a stud out of Boston College. I'm not a huge NCAAF fan, even I know that. I labeled Flacco a reach because, IIRC, people did NOT expect him to go in the first round. My labeling of "reach" has no correlation to players's success. My labeling of "reach" has everything to do with when a player is drafted, and that connection to the overall consensus of said players' expected draft slot. Duane Brown at 23 was a reach. It clearly worked out; that was a GREAT pick. But the overall consensus was that Brown was not a 1st round player. Granted, it only takes one team to decide a player's worth. I'm just stating that, every year, there's a team that seems to gamble on a QB in the first round when said quarterback is not widely considered a 1st round pick.

Doesn't really matter? He would've been gone before our pick. Maybe another QB needy team takes a 2nd or 3rd round prospect before us, but I'm not high on any of those guys anyway.
Yeah and it's not likely we would take him either. The biggest loser are the Bucs if it happens because I'm not convinced Mariota will be a better pro than Winston.
Consensus of media and .com scouts don't matter... Going by your line of thinking GM's wouldn't be needed. Coaches could just look on the internet and make their draft picks. And have you looked at the 2008 draft class...??? That 1st round was yukkkk... So why not roll the dice on a quarterback if one was needed. Do you think Baltimore should have drafted Felix Jones or Rashard Mendenhall in the 1st round instead of Flacco...? They needed a running back too and drafted Ray Rice in the 2nd round. I heard the 'reach' statement with Brown as well... Ironically Brown and Flacco ended up being two of the best players out of that 1st round. Maybe Ricky is just as good as Ozzie
Winston's father has BEEN saying his son would not go pro since before the season started and we ignored him.
For one of the teams at the top. Sure, that sucks for them. There was almost 0 chance he dropped to 16. That said, why does he stay in school? He's won a championship and a Heisman. Went 29-1. Why risk injury or a sub-par season? This is the profession you're being educated in college for. You have the opportunity to do it and be one of the highest picks. I don't get why he'd stay at this point.
Maybe he likes college... and doesn't care to get "rich quick" (which is the #1 reason why I feel most people choose to leave early). Andrew Luck was similar in that he didn't need to go pro for financial reasons... I think if you take away the $$$, most kids would choose to remain in college as much as they can prior to starting a high-pressure real-life job that puts you even more under the microscope/public eye.
Sure...but you can't take away the money. It's there now. It might not be there 1 year from now if he has a terrible season or blows out his knee. To me, it's a risk I wouldn't take.
Yup... And still possible needs some growing up to do. How good is he in baseball...? That's were the money is at anyway. What makes you think his family is in desperate need of the money...??? Florida St also paid a $50 thousand insurance policy for him as well.
Well, money apparently isn't everything to him. Sure, it might not be there a year from now... or it might still be there (as it was for Luck), and he gets to enjoy one more year of college before starting a real job. To each his own... but its not like he's throwing his life away. The NFL will still be there (again, if he's healthy)... and chances are he'll have a chance to be an even better pro with one more year of seasoning.
Well, how many sophomore QBs succeed in the NFL? How many have tried? The top guys were all seniors and juniors when they came out. Maybe he understands that he'll probably be asked to start immediately whenever he does enter the league and that he really needs more than 2 years of college experience to be truly ready for that.
Good, this would eliminate the possibility of the Titans getting Winston. Ideally, I'd have the Bucs take Winston and the Titans take Mariota...but if Winston is going back to school, then Mariota is sure-fire #1.
