Gio Gonzalez is signing a minor league deal with the Yankees worth $3M plus incentives. Wow. Keuchel’s miscalculation is worse than anyone could have imagined. He will be lucky to get a 8 figure deal at this point.
Dallas May be better off waiting until there are injuries during the season and seeing if the market changes or if a team gets desperate.
Once players start missing paychecks... the only ones that become desperate is them. Even then, no injury riddle team is going to offer a multi-year deal once the season starts. He shouldn't have to "prove it" at this point, but he and his agent should be focusing on major incentive-laden deals with a reasonable base salary... if he truly feels he's worth what he's asking for.
At this point Keuchel would likely miss at least 3 starts if he signed somewhere tomorrow. If he can't get a multi-year deal teams will start discounting their one year offers.
Yeah. Plus the fact that Gio may only be getting a minor league deal is not good news for DK. I don’t think DK is anywhere close to that type of deal, but I could definitely see him ending up w a 1y 10m-ish deal. Hopefully it’s with HOU...but if he’s playing the long term game, he may opt to pitch elsewhere to show he’s not a product of MMP.
Everyone is underestimating Boras. Rumors are that he has multi year offers with the Phillies/Royals. Im sure he as a 2 year deal and hes waiting out if anyone's wiling to give him a 3 year deal. I'll bet anyone here that he's signed before opening day.
Boras and Keuchel overestimated their position. If the reports are true that they were looking for a long term deal of 6-7 years with an AAV of $20 - $25 million annually, then they were definitely swinging for the fences and struck out. That five year $90 million contract that the Astros offered back in 2016 is looking pretty damn good right now. I’m sure that Keuchel and Boras have an offer they are holding onto while still shopping the market, but I doubt he gets more than two years. And the AAV will be more than likely be below $20 million. The other side to signing this late, is despite facing live batters at the Boras Sports Center, he still has to get his reps in with a new team. Lohse and Cobb did that last year and had pretty down years. I’ve always liked Keuchel and am grateful for his contributions to my hometown nine, but when it’s all said and done, he made some bad decisions regarding his market.
Mejdal was pigeon holed with the Astros. He was never going to reach the professional level he wanted in Houston.
Seeing that Rich Hill got a 3 year deal worth $48M guaranteed money at age 37, I'd be surprised if Keuchel takes less than a 4 year deal worth $70M. But it does look like he should have taken the Astros offer from a couple years ago. That would put him roughly at the same amount per year as Eovaldi, but you would think a lefty would demand a little more.
Well Trout and the Angels aren’t getting outdone by Harper and the Phillies it seems. 12 years and 430 million
Not really Astros news...but just got alert on my iPad that Trout signed a 12 year deal with the Angels for $430 million!!
This is good news for the next round of CBA discussions. The players have been grumbling that the owners haven't been spending enough money, but it's hard to argue that with a straight face in light of the contracts to Trout, Harper and Machado.
How on earth is Gio only worth $3MM? He's a consistently solid inning eater. 33 yrs old isn't bad for a 1-yr deal. Just two years ago, he had the best season of a really good career with a 6+ WAR. Last year was 2+. In the last 9 years, only 2016 was mediocre, and even that wasn't horrible.
Here's something interesting Player A in 2018 33 years old (currently) 34 starts 12-8 record 172 innings 139 strikeouts 1.180 WHIP 3.7 WAR Signed as a free agent for 2 years 14.1 million total Player B in 2018 31 years old (currently) 34 starts 12-11 record 204.2 innings 153 strikeouts 1.314 WHIP 2.6 WAR Still a free agent Now that teams are all about paying for a players projected value and not their past results I wonder how they value player B? Player A is Mike Fiers Player B is Dallas Keuchel Obviously, Fiers doesn't have the high level success compared to Keuchel, but it makes you wonder what kind of offers Keuchel really has received outside of the qualifying offer.
What they overestimated was the perception that DK is a #1 TOR starter, while the rest of baseball sees him as a #3 in decline.
