So I'm going to this dumpling place tomorrow for lunch that I never go to, mainly because it is downtown, but I've never had better dumplings. Sadder part is I invited someone to join, and I know it's going to come off weird eating in a mall. That said, I gave her three choices and that was the one she chose. So here are my "must" eat places, regardless of who you are with. Dumplings at Doozo. Vietnamese egg rolls at Hollywood Vietnamese on Montrose. Tex-Mex Cajun Virgin at BB's, also in Montrose. And for every vegetarian that just looked at everything in disgust? I present the ultimate felafel at Zabak's. And a Zabak's review. (I was eating this back when it was Mama's Po-Boy in the 80's on Hillcroft by Lee H.S.) http://blogs.houstonpress.com/eating/2010/04/food_fight_battle_falafel.php So, what are some other "must try" foods in Houston?
The beef poblano fajitas at Antonio's (small Mexican restaurant near my house on the corner of Buffalo and Holcombe) are amazing, some of the most underrated fajitas in town. I usually hate that restaurant, but those look pretty good
I eat that falafel sandwich at Zabak's at least twice a month. Ooooh, the spices are so perfect, and the hot sauce and tzatziki go so well together. They have great baba ghanouj and spinach pies too. Actually, I think you're the one who originally recommended it, at Master Baiter's shindig. It's definitely the best falafel I've had in the area...it's delicious and not super-greasy like some of the other restaurants. That fried chicken head still freaks me out.
Zabak's is the shizznit. I went to the Greek restaurant in a gas station for the first time last week and it was pretty awesome: http://www.yelp.com/biz/ekkos-greek-american-deli-houston And I mentioned this place to Jim a while back, but it's my favorite sandwich spot in the city. Mandola's Deli. I have been going there since a little kid when they had a place on the southeast side of town. Good old school italian deli: http://www.yelp.com/biz/mandolas-deli-houston
Forgive my intrusion, sir, but... why are (or why do YOU in particular, find) Vietnamese egg rolls ODD?
Fatty, I had lunch at Nino's yesterday and there were artichoke hearts in my pasta. It goes without saying that I immediately thought of you. True story.
Tom Ka Gai soup at Kanomwan! I guarantee you've never tasted anything like it. Chicken, coconut milk, lemongrass, ginger, cilantro... it's just a really weird flavor. Mix it up with some rice. On your first bite, you won't be able to tell if you hate it or love it. So, you'll have to take another taste... and another...and before you know it, you can't get enough of it!
I'm a self-proclaimed fat-ass and all i can say is that this is turning into one of my favorite threads ever. So many new things to try. Please dont stop posting. I am about to tear some **** up during lunch.
I lived down the road from that gas station for the last 7 years. Everyone told me it had some amazing greek food... but I could never bring myself to grabbing food at a gas station.
Breakfast/brunch at Goode Company Taqueria...Hunter's delight and Fajita Steak with Eggs are good. Really, everything on their breakfast menu is good. don't forget a margarita side note: their hamburger is top notch.
First dish I thought of. The closest Tom Kha Gai I've had to being as good as Kanomwan's was in Thailand. They really do make the best; I'm certain that it's laced with crack........or nicotin........or whatever is the most addictive substance known to man. But it is Oh so Good. Their crispy whole snapper with chili sauce is awesome too.......as is their green curry. Another thing I've been somewhat addicted to and is a bit odd is the "improved cesar salad" at Blue Water Grill in Jamaica Beach. It's a regular cesar salad without the parmesan. Instead, it has blue cheese, candied walnuts, bacon, and avocado. Yummy. If you don't like the sound of that, they have one of the best burgers around. Everything I've had at Hunyh restaurant near George R. Brown had been good, though I don't find anything odd about Vietnamese food. This sounds sort of odd, but I found it incredible and also addicting: the shredded pork and mustard green stirfry at the Chinese Cafe in the old Windsor Plaza (can't remember what they call it now).
