The bad thing is so many people will remember him for the last 10 years instead of the last 50. As a Steelers fan, I hated the Raiders during the 70s and 80s but very few people have impacted football like Al Davis. Like someone else who passed this week, Al did it his way and didn't care what others thought.
Sad loss but the man should have given up the reigns years ago. Franchise has been awful and it was his fault. With that being said, he was the best owner in the NFL for many years...time flies, time dies.
I hate death. I hate growing old. And I hate pretentiousness and self-important people once you get old. In that order. RIP, Al Davis.
RIP Al Davis - "Commitment to Excellence." "The Quarterback must go down and he must go down hard." "Just Win Baby." That's a huge difference in cheerleading styles compared to Mark Cuban. And that attitude is what made the Silver & Black who we NFL fans know today. If I were a sports team owner, that's how I'd do it ...the Al Davis way. And you better believe the Raiders will show up this Sunday in Houston. "And One More Thing" (Sorry Steve Jobs, couldn't resist) - Given the Raiders stadium situation in Oakland, does the passing of Al Davis now position the Raiders to a possible move back to LA, and Farmers Field? Me thinks so given the only alternative is sharing a stadium with the 49ers in Santa Clara.
Rip Al. Someone told me a few years ago that he played a part in the merger or the superbowl or something. Is that true?
I think it was Lamar Hunt. He wanted the AFL to play the NFL in a game. The first two games were called the NFL-AFL Championship games. The third game was the first to be called the Super Bowl after Hunt's daughter was playing with her Super Ball, that bouncy rubber thing.
