Nuggets' Ty Lawson charged with physical harassment, criminal mischief

Ty Lawson, the Denver Nuggets' star point guard, has been charged with physical harassment and criminal mischief.

Lawson appeared in Arapahoe County court Monday to be arraigned on the charges, according to court documents.

Lawson is free on a $1,000 bond, according to court records.

Denver Nuggets star Ty Lawson arrested on domestic violence charge

DENVER - Denver Nuggets' guard Tywon "Ty" Lawson was arrested in an alleged domestic violence incident in Arapahoe County on Saturday, according to court records.

The 25-year-old Lawson was arrested by sheriff's deputies on investigation of domestic violence-related harassment that includes either striking, shoving or kicking as well as a property damage charge, court records state. Both charges are misdemeanors.

A judge issued a mandatory protection order in the case, prohibiting Lawson from contacting the alleged victim.

Details on the arrest were not immediately available.

Lawson was released on $1,000 bond on Monday.

    ...

Lawson also had a Jan. 29, 2013 arrest in Denver for flight to avoid prosecution on a misdemeanor case out of Arapahoe County, court records say.

In April 2012, Lawson was cited in Arapahoe County for careless driving, driving with a license under restraint and permitting an unauthorized person to drive, records state. He pleaded guilty to permitting an unauthorized person to drive and the other charges were dismissed.

Well that sucks, I really liked Lawson's game. Seems like he has some issues though, what is it with Denver ending up with the thug wannabes of the NBA (Melo, JR Smith and now Lawson)?

Harassment and criminal mischief charges don't exactly make him a thug. Thugs get charged with felonies, not misdemeanors for shoving people.

A Saturday argument that ended in the arrests of both Denver Nuggets' star point guard Ty Lawson and his pregnant girlfriend started when she overheard him talking to another woman on the phone, according to affidavits filed against them.

The fight in their Arapahoe County home accelerated from there, with Lawson's girlfriend, Ashley Nicole Pettiford, 24, threatening to pack up and leave. Lawson, 25, then threw armfuls of her clothes around the room. Each broke the other's cell phone to get even, the affidavits say.

Lawson faces charges of criminal mischief and harassment, because Arapahoe County sheriff's deputies said he pushed Pettiford twice and moved her away from her closet to keep her from packing. Pettiford faces charges of criminal mischief and domestic violence because deputies said she intentionally threw Lawson's phone against a wall "in an attempt to get some control in the situation," the arrest affidavits show.

Pettiford's mother requested the deputies check on her daughter about 9:30 a.m. Saturday because Pettiford had told her earlier in the morning that she was fighting with Lawson, but the phone went dead.

Pettiford's mother told dispatchers she was concerned because her daughter is six months pregnant, and because she had told her mother that Lawson had pushed her before, the affidavits say.

Deputies who went to the home in the 8700 block of E. Wesley Drive in an unincorporated part of the county found it strewn with clothes, shoes, laptops, hangers and other items. Deputies had to climb over it to get into the bedroom, where they made note of a broken lamp shade and a suitcase near the closet door.

Crying, Pettiford told deputies that when Lawson came home about 2:30 a.m. she could hear him on the phone with another woman.

"At this point, she decided that she was tired of all of it and was going to pack her things and move," the affidavits say. She retrieved a suitcase and put it on the bed. As she started to pack, she said, Lawson came into the room and started grabbing her clothes and throwing them around the room even though "Lawson knows she is meticulous about her clothing."

The two argued, and Lawson would not let her get into the closet, the affidavits say. As she told him to let her get her things, "he grabbed both of her arms, above the elbow, and started pushing her back to the bed, telling her 'I'll get the clothes,'" deputies wrote.

Pettiford said she was able to get away but he grabbed her again.

"There was lots of yelling going on still at this point," the affidavits say. Mad, Pettiford said she went to the dresser where Lawson's phone was and threw it toward the hallway wall. Then she grabbed her own phone and called her mother. But the conversation was cut short because Lawson took her phone and threw it against another wall, the affidavit says. When he saw it wasn't broken, he ran it under a bathroom faucet.

Both were taken to the Arapahoe County Jail and have since been released on bond.

Sounds like the phone maker should pay these two to make a commercial highlighting how tough the phone is.

I'm not defending Lawson if he's cheating on his pregnant girlfriend (which is about as common for these guys as breathing, so sorry; otherwise, why are some of these couples together for five years with two kids before they get married?), but to be so stupid as to be on the phone with some other woman within hearing of the girlfriend?

    *cough* dumba$$! *cough*

    The commercial:

"Okay. She's caught you phone-flirting. She's going ballistic. But can she break a Nokia phone? Just let her try!"

    (CRACK!"

"Um.....okay, well, she did seem a little angry. Throw the phone out the fifth floor, it's gonna break, right? (aside) It worked in rehearsals...."
