Trump Offers Apology For Retweeting Anti-Muslim Videos From British Far-Right Party

Trump has been in hot water with British Prime Minister Theresa May for retweeting in November anti-Muslim videos that were posted by the deputy leader of the far-right Britain First party.

    Good Morning Britain reports:

Trump's retweets caused a firestorm in the U.K., as Laurel Wamsley reported for The Two-Way in November:

The president announced earlier this month that he has canceled a trip to the U.K. next month, citing a "bad deal" the Obama administration made for a new U.S. Embassy in London.

NPR's Scott Neuman reported for the Two-Way:

On Thursday, Trump met in Davos with May in what British newspapers were calling a clear-the-air session.

NPR's Scott Horsley reported that the two leaders have squabbled in the past, but they downplayed any friction in the transatlantic alliance.

Trump told the prime minister, "That was little bit of a false rumor out there. I just wanted to correct it frankly because we have great respect for everything you're doing."

May responded, "We continue to have a really special relationship between the U.K. and the United States."

With her country pulling out of the European Union, May is eager to strike a bilateral trade deal with the United States.

Trump says he welcomes that. He prefers one-on-one trade negotiations to big, multi-country deals.

White House economic adviser Gary Cohn says Trump will discuss his trade philosophy in a speech in Davos on Friday.

While its sorta late its never bad to apologize for a mistake even though he allowed wiggle room for himself ("If you're telling me they're horrible people, horrible racist people I would certainly apologize if you would like me to do that.").

Somehow I really doubt Trump has ever uttered an unqualified apology in his adult life.

...oh dear God, please don't let him start up that whole American-overseas-apology tour thing again...
...didn't we get enough of that with the last President?

This is NOT how you #MAGA...

    ...is it?

He's only apologizing (or rather expressing a willingness to apologize should one become necessary) to blunt the domestic criticism Teresa May is afraid of is she signs a trade deal with him. She needs a deal to strengthen her hand for Euro negotiations. A deal with the US will inevitably be slammed in the press, but they can at least squelch the angle that she did a deal with the guy who promoted the British white nationalists.

It's still Make Anglos Great Again.

Republicans were big on the "Real American" :wink:wink: deal when we had that Kenyan masquerading as Commander in Chief...

England needs the deal more than we do. The British press can bark all they want, but they know their country is bent if Americans don't give a favorable agreement, which was something Trump's predecessor threatened when they were voting Brexit.

Trump likes it because he thinks signing things makes him look presidential and lets him get away with his twitshows.

I strongly suspect he just parroted the same apology he gave his wife in the last few days:

"If you're telling me it was horrible to pay a pornstar to have sex with me, horrible too because it was months after our baby was born; I would certainly apologize if you would like me to do that."

I didn't see an apology from him. He's not sorry. He knew what he was doing.

He issued conditions by which he would issue an apology.

Go on, President Trump. Issue the apology. Admit you were wrong about something.

They certainly do need it. But with business community, media, etc all having been anti-Brexit, they aren't going to be pre-disposed to liking any replacement trade deals. So I expect a lot of grousing no matter what is in the deal. On Trump, I agree. He has the biggest microphone, so he can say NAFTA is bad and US-Britain deal is good, provide no evidence for either, but shout down anyone who says otherwise. Then he declares victory as the greatest dealmaker president in history. (He just needs to make at least one significant deal in order to actually qualify as a dealmaker, so he does need a counterparty like the UK for that.)

Agree. Not what I would call that particular ramble.

Agree. Never has been or will be.

Well... I'm not sure he ever knows what he is doing anymore. Just going by "instinct" and winging it, with an increasingly impaired mind, seems to me. (Yes, I know his military doctor ran a cognitive test, blah blah.)

So Mr. trump waits months after his stupidity to "apologize" and has to leave the country to do it. What a fool.

He knows. Just like when he said he had never heard of David Duke and didn't know he was a white supremacist we all knew he was lying. He plays stupid when it suits his purposes. He isn't stupid - he's quite intelligent but also very intellectually lazy.
