If Morey knew he would have Harden and Dwight, he probably would have kept Mirotic because of fit, but before that he needed the player with higher ceiling, which everyone felt that it was DMO at the time.
If we had known how good he would be in the future, we would've kept him. WTF Murrey why can't you predict the future.
You do realize the trade enabled us to get both DMO and Parsons? Is Mirotic so good over Dmo he was worth Parsons? It was a no brainer trade, you have two prospects, but DMo looked like he has more potential, and you get a chance to look at 2 more prospects (Flynn, and the pick that became Parsons). Comparing the two now one-on-one is useless because Morey can't see the future, he had no chance of knowing Mirotic would come over earlier than expected. If some dude came up to you and asked if you'd like 2M cash or a box, and you chose the cash and it turned out the box contained a check for 10M does that mean you made the wrong decision? It's the same thing here, you are looking for talent so you take the package that gives you more chances at getting talent (Dmo, Flynn and pick) over just 1 dude who might not even come over to the NBA.
The Parsons pick (#38) was one the Rockets already had, from the Clippers (Steve Novak trade years earlier). So they didn't get Parsons in that trade. I was fairly plugged in on that trade at the Toyota Center that night: http://bbs.clutchfans.net/showthread.php?t=206180 ORIGINALLY, that pick #38 was going to go to Minnesota. I can't remember what was finalized -- if it was something that got amended so they kept that pick instead (which is what I remember), or if the Rockets dealt it and bought it back, which is what it says here: http://www.nba.com/2011/news/06/23/wolves-rockets-trade.ap/ My recollection was that something (medical note, etc.) made both teams revise the deal and Houston kept the #38 pick.
Clutch pretty much nailed it. The Rockets originally held that #38 pick. They traded it to Minnesota during the draft in the Jonny Flynn trade that also netted them D-Mo's draft rights. Later during the draft, the Rockets bought that same pick back from Minnesota in order to select Parsons. After the draft, it was discovered that Flynn had a medical issue that Minnesota did not properly disclose, and the league/Rockets leaned on the Timberwolves to amend the original trade. The amended trade involved both (1) the Rockets keeping that #38 pick without having to pay Minnesota, as if they never traded it then bought it back, and (2) the Timberwolves having to give up their own 2012 second rounder. Bonus tidbit: The Rockets used that 2012 MIN pick, along with the expiring contracts of Flynn and Hasheem Thabeet, to acquire Marcus Camby from Portland. Camby gave Houston a nice 30 or so games, then worked with the Rockets in a sign-and-trade deal to New York that netted Houston the Knicks' own second rounders in 2014 (Nick Johnson) and 2015 (looking increasingly likely to fall in the #31-33 range). All because Minnesota wasn't fully forthcoming about Jonny Flynn's medical condition. Funny how these things play out sometimes.
Mirotic - 3/3/1-8 shooting DMo - 15/10/7-15 shooting Morey apparently can predict the future. And he can see beyond January 7th, 2015.
Mirotic would have been higher than DMo if it weren't for the whole buyout situation with Real Madrid. It wasn't even clear when Mirotic would come over. DMo on the other hand had clear intentions of playing in the NBA.
I get what your saying about exposure, but come on.... they're only five months apart, they're practically the same age.
I am happy that D-Mo outplayed Nikola in this game. That's all that matters to me. Go D-Mo! Go Houston Rockets!
We were swinging for home runs back then and D-mo had superstar upside with his length and ability with both hands.
