Nick Wright: Are the Warriors mortal if Steph Curry continues to Struggle?

Yes, as others have mentioned, Durant shooting 50% on ISO plays is still inferior to Curry running around draining 3 pointers and making passes to cutters.

The best thing we are doing is making him actually WORK on defense, something teams don't do enough. I think his ineffectiveness in this series is as much due to his energy expended on defense as it is due to any injury, especially when combined with our switching defense. During the Pelicans series everyone acted like Curry was BACK ZOMG, can't change that narrative now.

Thank goodness we have Chris Paul and not Pablo Prigioni and Jason Terry anymore, no disrespect.

 

I disagree that you can't hid guys against us. Park Curry in the corner to guard Tucker. That's what I would do -- make Tucker play big.

 

Tucker would come set the pick until Curry is forced to switch on to Harden/Paul, then would run back to the corner. You’re not going to be able to hide him this series.

Or post his little a** up in that scenario! Tucker is short, but we all know he is a truck. He would abuse Curry. It would just be another form of iso. So yes, it will be hard to hide curry for sure. I wonder if we will ever reach a point in this series where Steph gets benched for some stretches.

 

He would just flop and get PJ in foul trouble.

 

They did the same things and whooped us in game one.

Our bench has to be immortal in order for us to win.

Don't forget James was mortal in game 2.

Make open shots, move for the extra play someone else might finish on, deny their cupcake positions.

So then don't switch off. You know Tucker is going to the corner. Obviously sometimes they won't be able to fight through fast enough, but I just don't understand why you would continuously allow a switch to be made that puts you at such a significant disadvantage.

 

The Rockets bench don't need to be immortal, just average and the Rockets will win by a couple of possessions.

 

I wouldn't mind they blow them out three more times.

I liked the faster reads, them playing more with what D'Antoni' calls "force", Gordon playing aggressive without being shaky, Ariza taking the iso drives rather than settling or resetting the play (**** you very much for those early four fouls Tony Brothers)

It'd be real surprising if Curry doesn't have at least one good game. Credit the rockets for them doing work and letting the media make excuses.

 

Yes, this is what they have been doing the last 2 games. They will set those picks until Curry ends up on Harden or Paul.

 

You should try watching how the Rockets play offense before you draw up the gameplan coach.

If they didn’t switch, Tucker would just run to the basket. They aren’t dumb, and it is extremely hard to just hedge and stay on your initial man. There’s a reason we switch, and Golden State switches.

I understand that if you're not quick and precise, they'll beat you to the basket...but I wouldn't necessarily worry about Tucker beating you to the basket. Someone else can slide over for a charge and even if Tucker passed to the corner, the charge would likely still be called. But there were SEVERAL situations where we set the pick and the Warriors just let it happen even though Harden would still pull back for a few seconds before making a move.

If they're not going to attack right away, then fight the screen to limit the possessions Curry is the primary defender. It would be more complicated and would take more communication, but it wouldn't result with so many easy buckets scored on Curry, IMO.

 

He would burn more energy fighting through screens all night, plus be too bruised and sore to shoot.
