It may have less to do with personal tax nonsense than just being used to getting what you want by cutting a check. I don't wish to victimize these owners but think of all the sports leagues run by high-net worth people that failed overnight; the costs of running a quality franchise are always high, especially if you want to create a pleasant enough experience for people to want to come even if you're not winning.
