The missing colony has always been a favorite mystery of mine. (Hopefully not a repost.) Short version: Brits took an x-ray of a piece of paper glued over a section an old map of the coastline. The patch hides a previously unknown fort - they are theorizing that it might have been the home of the colonists and the fort was purposefully hidden because of the threat of spies in the court. Shorter version: Aliens.
Roanoke is a cool historical story, and I remember seeing an outdoor pageant about it where the colony was when I was a kid. I loved it. Thanks for posting this.
Parsimony. They most likely were assimilated into an Indian camp or were massacred by one. Perhaps a bit of both.
(Had to google Parsimony, kudos!) Is assimilation/massacre the most likely scenario? Yeah, probably... (that or werewolves) But, I think the new theory is at least plausible. While the patch certainly doesn't prove anything - it very well might have just been a correction; there might never have been a fort in that location. Native Americans keeping things hidden vs. British Court keeping things hidden? Epic Rap battles ooffffffff Historyyyyyyy! Oh, and the shorter version should have been: Conference Relocation pee-pee games.
The story always intrigued me as well when I first studied it in 6th grade or so. I remember that event and the Kennedy assassination being two things I wanted real badly to know everything that really happened.
